About this listen

Detective Everett Larkin of New York City’s Cold Case Squad has been on medical leave since catching the serial killer responsible for what the media has dubbed the “Death Mask Murders.” But Larkin hasn’t forgotten that another memento—another death—is waiting to be found.

Summer brings the grisly discovery of human remains in the subway system, but the clues point to one of Larkin’s already-open cases, so he resumes active duty. And when a postmortem photograph, akin to those taken during the Victorian Era, is located at the scene, Larkin requests aid from the most qualified man he knows: Detective Ira Doyle of the Forensic Artists Unit.

An unsolved case that suffered from tunnel vision, as well as the deconstruction of death portraits, leads Larkin and Doyle down a rabbit hole more complex than the tunnels beneath Manhattan. And if this investigation isn’t enough, both are struggling with how to address the growing intimacy between them. Because sometimes, love is more grave than murder.

Kale has done it AGAIN

I'm not even going to act like i didn't come into this thinking I couldn't love this book more, because I know how magical of a job Kale did with Madison Square Murders. And yet... my expectations were exceeded AGAIN.

The way he manages to make a man who doesn't speak with inflection still so emotionally powerful is truly a gift. It reinforces those beautiful moments where he lets himself truly feel because Larkin trusts Doyle not to make it a negative association he'll have to live over and over. That's a bond that's beyond the love in many romance novels.

And the way in which he handles Doyle and the revelations about his life... the flicker of elevated emotions before he pulls himself together.... I'd give this audible and book 1000000 stars if I could.

Closure

Larkin’s work in cold case is about closure and helping victims be remembered. He is put on a path where present and past collide. Doyle is there to help with clues and support. The crimes are harsh but the story deals more with solving then the crimes themselves. It was interesting to see how the separate threads come together in this story. I also enjoyed the audio version of this book #CMCon25

Can't wait for book three!

My love for book one of this series is well documented, and I expect I'll grow even more fond of book two as I listen to it again and again. There were a few things about this book that I didn't adore (mostly stylistic quibbles that are more opinion than anything else), and even after having read it and listened to it, I'm still not sure I understand how the mystery worked out (I'll catch up to it eventually, I hope!). But I do love Doyle and Larkin, and I can't wait to see how their relationship evolves in the next book.

My thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of this audiobook.

So Great!

Absolutely loved it! I am all in with Larkin and Doyle. I absolutely adore their relationship. The way Doyle just loves Larkin for who he is, the support, the honesty between them. Just everything! The mystery was great as we were kept guessing as the 2 detectives closed in on the suspect. So so good! And Kale Williams narration is just perfection! On to book 3!

Loved it!

4.5
Okay. So I didn't really forget how much I love Everett & Ira, but omg I was so happy to be reading them again. Immediately Everett's dry humor had me laughing out loud. And Ira is just so KIND. I love how understanding he is of everything about Everett, and adores him just as he is.

I can't wait to see them TOGETHER, and to see what's going to happen next... and for Noah to be INVISIBLE.

BRILLIANT!!!!!!

I was so happy to get my hands of Subway Slayings. I have been eager to read more Evie and Ira.
I devoured this book in one sitting and was left with the best kind of book hangover.
The kind that makes you turn around and do an immediate relisten!
Kale Williams brings his A game to this amazing audiobook. He adds such depth and dimension to the characters. I was completely enamored with his portrayal of Evie and Ira.

C.S. Poe has an amazing talent of creating complex, intriguing, irresistible characters that her readers become obsessed with.
Her meticulous research adds such depth to her stories. Locations become secondary characters that flesh out the mystery.

The slow, beautiful building of intimacy and love that is Evie and Ira is breathtaking. When a reader can feel the emotions present from just a smile that is a gift.
The mystery will keep you turning page after page, never bored but always guessing!
This book was an absolute delight to read and I can't wait for book 3!

Perfect match

A really good mystery, great atmosphere, a pair of extremely engaging and very complicated detectives, a romance in the making, and something sinister lurking in the background, all brilliantly handled by C.S. Poe, then raised another level by Kale Williams’ inspired, stunningly on-point performance. It doesn’t get better than this. It’s perfect.

Perfect narrator, too!

This is one of those books you can't put down, start to finish. The main character is so unique - I love the Mr. Spock-ishness of him! The dialogue between him and his sidekick/love interest often has me in stitches. the world building, the characters, the back stories, the plot - ALL are excellent and make this a "must have" for your Audible library. Also, Kale Williams does a superb job of narrating and brings the story to life. Too bad you can only give 5 stars to this book!
