This was a very detailed and descriptive World War I account from the German perspective. This is a top World War I bio about what life on the Western Front for Germans was like and first hand account on combat and life in the trenches. A great work, but the narration was not the best in the world. That part could have been better.

good background noise for wargaming and if you have listened to it once you can pick up wherever you are I alternate between this and all quite on the Western front one problem and if is my hearing when the said shooting slits I thought it was S###ing slits but it is my hearing

As a former US marine (2008) I’ve heard countless references to this book. I am so glad to have finally listened to it. It was enhanced by truly a deft reading. Fantastic.

Just incredible

Do not expect a futurist style work, nor an anti war work like ‘all quiet’. This is a strange middle ground. The narrator is excellent, though sometimes pronounces German or French without translation (though likely an error in the work and not him). Phenomenal book.

Phenomenal book, objective in perspective (?)

I believe the narrator could not have been better for this book. One of best of WW1.

Really good!

The story is written as a fact based narrative than an emotional based narrative. I would have enjoyed spending time with the author discussing his experiences.

Matter of fact

This was an incredible account of the author’s experience in World War 1. It was gut-wrenching and profound. Without being sappy or moralistic, it left me with the impression that the best men of Europe butchered each other needlessly and their countries never recovered. Nevertheless, these men were truly admirable and worthy of remembering.

A Real Classic

The Narrator did a better job than I could, however I struggled with his accent. You're listening to a 100 year old account by a German soldier narrated by what sounds like an Irishman.

great book

A matter of fact telling of the personal experiences of the author. He does not try to enter into the politics or propaganda of the the war. The dispassionate relating of real life in the trench are all the more moving because of it.

A most moving account of personal experiences.

Easy to follow and listen to. catches the dry wistfulness of the text. Amazing story.

Great pacing of a great translation
