He is convicted despite his protests of innocence, but questions soon arise over what really happened. "The Rider of the Ruby Hills" is the story of Ross Haney, who rides into Ruby Hills country hoping to settle down. Story
Louis L'Amour was the most decorated author in the history of American letters and a recipient of the Medal of Freedom. Now collected here in a single book are several of Louis L'Amour's finest Western stories the way Mr. L'Amour wrote them. At the time Louis L'Amour was writing, it was common practice for editors to rewrite the manuscript to fit certain publishing criteria. The text of The Strong Land has been restored, and the stories within it appear as Mr. L'Amour intended.

They said write what you know so that's what I did. I wrote dirty, I wrote erotic, I wrote the truth. And then they called me a liar. But it's not me who's lying, it's them. Our story isn't for everyone. It's not even for us. So if you're looking for the fairy tale and the stupid prince on his dumb white horse, move along. You've got a hold of the wrong book. The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Story
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Story
Louis L'Amour is now one of the most iconic Western writers of all time, but once upon a time he was Jim Mayo, a regular writer for the pulps. Some of the tales he wrote in those days stuck with him enough that he later revised and expanded them into novels. But there was a special magic to the originals, and after research and restoration, these stories appear here now in their original form.

Story
In Riders of the Dawn, a young gunslinger is changed for the better by a meeting with a beautiful woman. A classic range-war western, this novel features that powerful, romantic, strangely compelling vision of the American West for which L'Amour's fiction is known. In the author's words: "It was a land where nothing was small, nothing was simple. Everything, the lives of men and the stories they told, ran to extremes."

Totally Enjoyable combination of stories
Where does Stories of the Golden West rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This collection hit the spot. It contains an out-and-out romance by Zane Grey, a suspenseful story by Max Brand told from the unusual perspective of a child, and a full-fledged mystery//western by Louis L'Amour.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Stories of the Golden West?
I always enjoy how Louis L'Amour can put some historical education and perspective into his stories. The background for his Captain Tom Kettridge is an example of that: the character's resume is a survey of wars and battles fought around the world at the time of the Old West era.
Which scene was your favorite?
The descriptions of sliding down a haystack in the moonlight made for a fun and memorable scene in the Zane Grey story. For the rest, shootout scenes are always fun.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I could have listened to it all at once if time had permitted, it was all that good. But the audio player sometimes cut out on me and I had to pick up the story later.
