المعظم يعرف هذا الكتاب والبعض قد درس فصوله لكن المعلومة التي لا يعرفها الكثير أنَّ الاسم الأصلي ل"كليلة ودمنة هو "قصص الكتب الخمسة أوالبانشاتانترا.
هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا اليوم هو محاكاة للبانشاتانترا حيث جمعها البانديت فيشنوشارما من أقدم الحكايات الباقية في شبه القارة الهندية لتعليم وتنوير أبناء الملك "أماراشاكتي" الحمقى ثقيلي الظل...
كثير منها عن الحكمة، مكتوبة بأسلوب حكاية داخل حكاية، رغم عودتها للقرن الثالث ما قبل الميلاد، لكنها تتمتع بشعبية حتى اليوم بين الصغار والكبار لما بها من حكمة وكذلك لطرافتها وذكاءه
