About this listen

Margaret and her best friend Elizabeth both have brothers fighting the war against Hitler and, like everyone else they know, they are filled with feelings of patriotism. But the girls are also involved in their own personal war at home. Gordy Smith, the worst bully in the sixth grade, teases and torments them, and Margaret is scared to death of him.

But when Gordy and his pals Toad and Doug grow bolder than ever, Margaret and Elizabeth come up with a daring plan to get even. That’s when the girls discover a shocking secret about Gordy that turns their lives upside-down and draws them into a startling confrontation with family, friends, and their own strongly held ideas.

excellent! I lived my childhood through this book

in the 1960's I played step on a crack. The plot, the story and the narration is so far beyond the title, that in dread I was totally wishing there were more than 28 chapters. The beauty of explaining world war II from the viewpoint of a child was riveting!

This Grandma loved this book!

Would you listen to Stepping on the Cracks again? Why?

I always appreciate when the characters in a book become so real that I feel I have lost friends when the book ends. Stepping on the Cracks definitely felt that way! I enjoyed the elements of patriotism and the window into family life when a member is missing while away "at war". I rarely rate a book with 5 stars, but I had to give this one five, both on the audible site & also on Goodreads.com. I will be looking for more from this author!

My 4th Mary Downing Hahn book!

I teach 6th grade language arts and some of the books for this age level get quite boring and often seem simple. Mary Downing Hahn creates relatable characters that teen readers don’t roll their eyes at and adults can respect. Her other books are horror genre, but this realistic fiction is great! Looking forward to sharing this with my classes. It’s nice to have found an author who I can trust to share with young people.

A good story

This is a good solid story about real people who, at times, show great strength and great weakness. The characters are realistic and make you feel as if you are in the story with them. I highly recommend.
