About this listen

Does the "God" part of addiction recovery turn you off of the process? Are you the type of person who prefers a practical, no-nonsense, psychology-based approach to sobriety that is rooted in rational principles and actions? If so, "Staying Sober Without God" has what you're looking for.

Staying Sober Without God provides an overview of alcoholism, drug addiction, and behavioral addictions along with a modernized version of the 12 steps referred to as "The Practical 12 Steps". These steps, written by a recovering addict and licensed psychotherapist, are adapted from the original 12 steps. They contain much of the original wisdom of the 12 steps without any reference to God or the supernatural.

Staying Sober Without God also provides education and guidance in areas of recovery that the original 12 steps don't fully address such as physical health, mental health conditions, fun and hobbies, and effective communication. The end result is a robust, well-rounded guide to a balanced recovery lifestyle that can help you stay forever free from your compulsive behaviors if you choose to be.

Finally, there is a path to recovery for the rest of us!

Having Difficulty with "Supernatural" Recovery?

Extremely useful explanation of a rational approach to the twelve step experience. Not only does Jeffrey Munn offer some alternative ways to think about the recovery process, but after listening to this book, I'll be less distracted and disengaged when the "God Talk" gets heavy in the meeting that I regularly attend. I am EXTREMELY thankful for this well-written (and well-narrated) book!

Even if you are a very faithful believer, you may benefit from some of the concrete and scientific explanations offered for how positive change can occur within us.

Straightforward and real

This book is organized so you can jump in at any step any time, as needed. I found the author’s examples and anecdotes to be at once witty and helpful. Having dropped out of 12 steps because of the religion, I wish I’d have had this companion guide all those years ago! Such a necessary resource for the addict who wants recovery, but has not drunk that particular kool-aid. Also, the author’s reading of it on the audiobook is unedited excellence.

Great book for sobriety

This book has been an excellent resource for sobriety. 12-step meetings have always mashed that religious trauma button of mine, being they talk frequently about "god", and frequently meet in churches. This book does a great job of translating the god nonsense into practical steps to move towards sobriety. It makes a bit more sense now and I'm glad someone went through the work of explaining the 12 steps in practical terms to spread the message to non-religious people.

Excellent book 🤩

This book is packed with practical tips and advice which I found very easy to relate to. I have read this book a few times and the audiobook experience has helped me revisit the content.

Note: there are some problems with the chapter marks which overlap across the first few chapters. Once you get past step 2 its fine
