Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Story
In this sweeping history, Ireland's best-known historian, Tim Pat Coogan, tackles the dark history of the Irish Famine and argues that it constituted one of the first acts of genocide. In what the Boston Globe calls "his greatest achievement", Coogan shows how the British government hid behind the smoke screen of laissez faire economics, the invocation of divine providence, and a carefully orchestrated publicity campaign, allowing more than a million people to die agonizing deaths and driving a further million into emigration.

Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

The Barbarossa family’s roots are far more ancient and ethereal, but they are bound to the Gearys by a shared history of murder, insanity, and adultery. When Rachel Geary and Galilee, the seductive prince of the Barbarossa clan, fall in love, they unleash powerful enmities that could destroy both dynasties. Shorter and more conventional than some of Barker’s other work, this novel is especially rich with complex, passionate, three-dimensional characters, lush settings, and elegant language.

In 1631 Elizabeth Winthrop, newly widowed with an infant daughter, set sail for the New World. The Speckled Monster is both a hair-raising tale of courage in the face of the deadliest disease that has ever struck mankind, and a gripping account of the birth of modern immunology. Jennifer Lee Carrell's dramatic story follows two parents who, after barely surviving the agony of smallpox themselves, flouted 18th century European medical tradition by borrowing folk knowledge from African slaves and Eastern women in frantic bids to protect their children. Their heroic struggles gave rise to immunology.

Story
Long defamed as a vicious pirate, Captain James Cook (a.k.a Hook) was in fact a dazzling wordsmith who left behind a vibrant, wildly entertaining, and entirely truthful memoir. His chronicle offers a counter narrative to the works of J.M. Barrie, a "dour Scotsman" whose spurious accounts got it all wrong. Now, award-winning playwright John Pielmeier is proud to present this crucial historic artifact in its entirety for the first time.

"It was in the first week of October in the year 1391 that I first came face to face with the man who owned me… the man whose lightest word was to us, his villeins, weightier than the King’s law or the edicts of our Holy Father…” So began the story of Martin Reed - a serf whose resentment of the automatic rule of his feudal lord finally flared into open defiance.

A slow start but ends well
A story centred around the characters on an ocean crossing starting with separate stories which were steadily woven together. It was tough to get into the story but after persevering I eventually got into it and the ending which brought all the stories together was worth hanging in for but not enough for me to go searching out other titles by this author.

Quite Good
A bit overly striving to be politically correct, but quite entertaining. I may have to read another by this author, at some point.

Excellent story and important historical setting
I’ve read several books, fiction and non-fiction, about the emigration from Ireland, the famines, the British control of the land, etc. I also visited Dublin and visited the Jeanie Johnston replica ship that had an amazing captain who took care of his passengers (look it up) and the EPIC museum about the Irish emigration (worth a visit). So I appreciated the historical background in this story immensely. In addition to providing this important historical setting, there is an excellent plot with some interesting twists and very well-defined characters. O’Connor’s writing is excellent and the narrator does a fine job.

Engrossing
I loved this book, most especially due to the superb narration. I liked how the plot unfolded in a variety of ways—letters, ship notes, the different POV of the characters. The sequel gets very mixed reviews but I will probably try it given how much I liked this book, my first from this author.

Excellent, but why is the important Preface missing from the recording?
I am a fan of Joseph O'Connor's work, and greatly enjoyed this rendition of Star of the Sea. HOWEVER, when I came to read the printed version of the novel, I discovered that there is a Preface that precedes Chapter One that is not in the Audible version. The Preface introduces the important character we come to know of as Pius Mulvey, as well as the idea of his having a murderous intent.

I thought it would never end
It certainly passes the time if you need to listen to tales of never ending misery, though I don’t think I could stomach it in print form. I dozed off somewhere toward the middle so am somewhat confused. Did Mary nearly marry her half brother, and was she the same Mary whose husband and child were killed by the murderer? If so, seeing as her husband was the brother of the priest, how come she had earlier married this priest and was the brother/priest Nicholas one and the same as the Nicholas who died in a mad episode of self harm outside their family cottage?
A rollicking yarn or a melodrama? Both I guess, though I think it could be much improved by leaving off the last three chapters.

Engrossing
As a descendant of those who fled the famine from Cork in the 1840's I was deeply interested in the story. My grandparents were too far removed to have any tales to tell so I fantasized my family was on this ship. The plot is good with interesting historical details. The narration is first rate and adds immensely to the enjoyment.

An evocative epic
The Star of the Sea on 2nd consumption having previously read these same pages 10 years earlier was as engrossing and fulfilling as before. It is beautifully narrated here capturing the time and bringing to life the depths of its fascinating characters of which there are many.

Excellent and thoughtful
I actually bought this book in honor of the author’s sister, Sinead. I will read Joseph O’Connor’s other books because he is a great writer.
