About this listen

Troubles begin for sports reporter A.B. Berkowitz when she is assigned to cover the Washington Senators, who are having a lousy season. When A.B. points out the team's ineptitude, the players refuse to talk to her, except to attempt to gross her out as often as possible. Into this mix come the team's televangelist owner, her hard-core editor, a two-timing boyfriend, and an aging All-Star catcher who is becoming romantic.©1990 Jane Leavy (P)2004 Blackstone Audiobooks Contemporary Fiction Fiction

Critic reviews

"Raunchy...authentic...this tale by a former sportswriter for the Washington Post will delight readers willing to accept a healthy dose of vulgarity with their humor, especially those who know and love the rhythms and complexities of the national pastime." (Publishers Weekly)
"A funny, tender, true-to-life story of baseball, journalism, and war between the sexes." (Library Journal)

A Blog before its time....

I stumbled on this book because I like the narrator. I read the reviews and almost didn't purchase it. It is actually quite good. The author's turn of a phrase is delightful. Its not a subject that I would normally relate to but it didn't take too long for me to get sucked into A.B.'s life. It reminded me of reading someone's blog. Anna Fields reads it with great skill and that adds to the entertainment value. If you like the written word (even when its read to you), you will appreciate Jayne Leavy's account. Is it sometimes a little crude? Yes. Is it appropriately crude and not for effect. Yes.

enjoyed it thouroughly

This was a great audio book. The characters were very well defined, and the narrator did an excellent job distinguishing between them. This book helped pass several long rides.

TRASH

Any additional comments?

36 minutes in and if I heard one more euphemism for penis I would have thrown my listening device across the room. There is NO story here, move on save your time, money, and ears.

Lots of fun and some great characters

This was an engaging book with so many characters to love, hate, sneer at, and more. If you're a sports fan, it's even funner. So much happens to keep you going along in the story. You find yourself picking up lots of the dialogue and saying them to others cause it's so good. Would like to have a sequel to this book.

waste of a credit

I tried more than once to listen to this book. I have always loved Anna Fields and she can usually make any book worth listening to. But there is no hope for this. It is the longest book about nothing I have ever attempted. I always finish my books, always, well, this book has broken my record. The author could not capture my attention. If a good story is like spinning a yarn. This book is book a remnant yarn many differant colors and way too long. You just don't know what to do with it.

Pure fun

I highly recommend Jane Leavy's baseball biographies about Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle. This fictional account of a season as a female baseball beat writer was written before those books, and I recognized some of the real-life stories. She gives great insight into a sports locker room and the fragile men who inhabit them. This ESPN and MLB Network-watching female sports fan loved every minute of it. Hey, guys, the romance is at a minimum -- it's mostly about jock-scratching, home-run hitting, foul-mouthed and emotionally complicated athletes. Like a baseball game itself, "Squeeze Play" is fun to watch unfold.

Numb

This audio selection just went on and on and on about absolutely nothing. I mean nothing. I finally had to just give up. It was mindless. The only reason I gave it the time that I did was becaue the narrator happens to be a favorite of mine, but even she could not save this selection.
