About this listen

Fifteen-year-old Laurel Goodwin wakes up to find her older sister Ivy missing from their Airstream trailer in the Oregon redwoods. A recurring nightmare convinces her that Ivy was abducted, but no one takes her dream seriously, including her mom. Laurel, a loner, has to learn to ask for help, and Jasper Blake, a mysterious new kid who shares her love of old books, quickly becomes her ally. Together they find their quiet town holds a deep secret and is the epicenter of a dark prophecy.

Laurel soon learns that her worst enemies, mean girls Peyton Andersen and Mei Rosen, are developing powers that she needs to find and save Ivy. With time running out, Laurel realizes that power doesn't always take the form that you expect. And once she learns to look beyond her snap judgments, she develops an unexpected gift of her own.

Subtle Suspense

I loved this book. It started in a very curious fashion, slowly building up the suspense until arriving at the pinnacle.

A listen every YA fan will fall in love with!

Laurel is a believable and likable protagonist who drives the story forward at a healthy pace. All of the characters were unique to themselves and added texture to the story. The beginning setting is mysterious and purposely a little drab (an old trailer in the woods), yet the authors managed to infuse so much whimsy and vibrancy into the story. Jasper was a swoon-worthy love interest and his baggage made sense. I liked that even though Laurel was self-conscious, she could feel that they had something. The romance felt like a partnership to me, as Laurel clearly isn’t a damsel in distress but rather one of the knights in shining armor trying to save her sister. This was a great take on modern love: romantic, family and friendship.

Lastly, the reader was top tier! Sarah Drew was my favorite audio book performer, but now she’s tied with Sarah Naughton.

I loved every second of this one and was sad when it was over! Can’t wait for more!

pablum...sheesh

trite, predictable, tedious, plodding, I think you can see that this was not my favorite listen...I suppose that it is acceptable for young adult fiction, it just didn't work for me.
