About this listen

From the award-winning author of Some Boys comes an unflinching examination of rape culture that delves into a family torn apart by sexual assault.

It's been two years since the night that changed Ashley's life. Two years since she was raped by her brother's teammate. And a year since she sat in a court and watched as he was given a slap on the wrist sentence. But the years have done nothing to stop the pain.

It's been two years of hell for Derek. His family is totally messed up, and he and his sister are barely speaking. He knows he handled it all wrong. Now at college, he has to come to terms with what happened, and the rape culture that he was inadvertently a part of that destroyed his sister's life.

When it all comes to a head at Thanksgiving, Derek and Ashley have to decide if their relationship can be saved - and if their family can ever be whole again.

I usually like to read adult fiction, romance suspense, etc. I steer far away from high school settings in books, however, this book is written well and describes in great detail the after affects of rape. There's no inappropriate language or scenes I actually think this would be a good book to have high schoolers read. It shows the point of view of the victim and the impact it has on friends and family around them. It is very lecture-y (I know that's not a word but it fits here), but it did keep my attention throughout the book and just kept making me think how high-schoolers (girls and boys) should read it.

very long lecture

I liked this a lot. A side of rape culture that is often hushed or hidden was brought to light in a beautiful way. This story follows a family before and after a rape occurs. It shows the struggle of the raped and the family member struggling to work through the trauma. I cried at Ashley's video diary. It was so human and so raw. It really gives you a perspective many are afraid to show. Great story!

Raw and Unapologetically Human

This was a raw look at the aftermath of rape. Told from the viewpoint of survivor and survivors brother, it was a unique insight for both survivors, and their loved ones.

Wow! This story, though just a story, was one of the realest I’ve heard/read. The subject can be triggering but so needed to be talked about and how it impacts not just the survivor but the family as a whole.

So real!
