Na tien jaar gevangenschap komt Tookie abrupt vrij. Gedreven door haar in de cel ontdekte liefde voor boeken begint ze aan een nieuw hoofdstuk. Ze vindt een baan als boekverkoper bij een kleine boekhandel in Minneapolis die is gespecialiseerd in inheems-Amerikaanse verhalen. Daar ontmoet ze Flora, haar 'irritantste favoriete klant'. Altijd was zij in de boekhandel te vinden, totdat ze op Allerzielen plotseling overlijdt. Maar ze verdwijnt niet. Wanneer Flora's geest in de winkel terugkeert en haar blijft achtervolgen, wordt Tookie gedwongen het mysterie rondom Flora's leven en haar dood te ontrafelen.
Ondertussen gaat de wereld op slot vanwege de coronapandemie en wordt Minneapolis opgeschrikt door de moord op George Floyd. Gevangen in een verdeeld land vindt Tookie een toevluchtsoord tussen de boeken en probeert ze haar weg te vinden in een jaar dat het begin van het einde lijkt.
