About this listen

Virgil Erath is on death row for a crime he didn't commit. But he gets a new beginning when he is mystically transported to a planet of hallucinatory landscapes, warring humanoid races, and a cloud-filled sky that has never seen the sun. Its inhabitants of this world call it Amtor—others have called it “Venus.”

Captured by a clan of winged warriors, Virgil is brought before the great Jong Kum Kloojong. But this “king of kings” is under attack by a deadly terrorist sect, and Virgil may be his only hope of saving Amtor from an apocalyptic war.

THE WILD ADVENTURES OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS

In the Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs series, today’s authors innovate and expand upon Burroughs’ classic tales of wonder in truly wild fashion, even moving his characters and storylines outside the bounds of canon to alternate universes! Skies of Venus, the latest volume in the series, transports listeners back to the mysterious, shrouded world of Amtor that was discovered by Carson Napier in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic novel Pirates of Venus, but this time to experience it through the eyes of an Earthman of the twenty-first century.

A new chapter in the Carson of Venus series

I will be honest here and state upfront that the Carson of Venus series has not been my favorite Edgar Rice Burroughs series. It always seemed to me that it felt like a pale variation on the stellar Barsoom series. But now I am reconsidering that stance.

In Skies of Venus our protagonist is Virgil Eraz. Virgil is a modern day loser from the wrong side of the tracks and, as we meet him, awaiting execution for a murder he didn't commit, but was blamed for. Unlike most of ERBs heroes, Virgil is very much an Everyman, not particularly wealthy, educated, or special in any way. He does possess a fatalistic sense of street smarts and a mind that even he underestimates.

Virgil is drawn, very John Carter like, through the ether at the moment of his execution to land on Venus, AKA: Amtor. Virgil's adventures in the wilds of Amtor and his subsequent adventures in the court of Carson and Duare, along with his acclimating himself to life on Amtor are very enjoyable. Virgil's sense of humor and cynical nature cutting through the pretentiousness of court intrigue.

In short, this reinvigorated the series for me and I can't wait to see what comes next.

My one down side is that the book ends on a substantial cliffhanger. Now the waiting begins.

Oh, I forgot to say, Buy This Book!

Amazing storytelling

After John Carter of Mars I wanted more. Years later I read Carson of Venus and thought yeah this is the kind of story I can sink my teeth into. The adventures of ERB where other writers pick up the torch and continue his stories are done very well as in times it reads like ERB. Well done!!
