Acerca de esta escucha

The definitive, award-winning biography of the legendary chief and his dramatic role in the history of westward expansion

Reviled by the United States government as a troublemaker and a coward, revered by his people as a great warrior chief, Sitting Bull has long been one of the most fascinating and misunderstood figures in American history. Distinguished historian Robert M. Utley has forged a compelling portrait of Sitting Bull, presenting the Lakota perspective for the first time and rendering the most unbiased, historically accurate, and vivid portrait of the man to date.

The Sitting Bull who emerges in this fast-paced narrative is a complex, towering figure: a great warrior whose skill and bravery in battle were unparalleled; the spiritual leader of his people; a dignified but ultimately tragically stubborn defender of the traditional ways against the steadfast and unwelcome encroachment of the white man.

I learned quite a bit about SB, inasmuch as one can from a modern white writer. Considering the interviews with relatives and friends it’s probably as close as we’ll ever get to the real Sitting Bull. I enjoyed this.

Very enlightening book

So… I’m conflicted with this review. The book and writing were fine, the performance good enough, The accounts fair enough from a “white perspective” but a Lakota perspective…I just don’t know. The author by his own account bases much of this book on encrypted transcripts of first hand accounts from people who knew Sitting Bull. Yet he states that the questions posed to the people who knew them were perhaps misleading. He does not, from what I could tell, include any verbal histories handed down from the Lakota people themselves. I learned a lot, but am curious what the Lakota people feel of this work. It answered some questions and raised more. I guess that is what a good historical book should do.

Lakota perspective?

Sitting Bull’s weaknesses and strengths are equally addressed. I came away with a deepened appreciation for the struggles of the Indian peoples. Nicely narrated.

Insightful and Well Performed
