About this listen

Five years rebuilding your life. Five words will destroy it again.

Mia Hamilton lived the perfect life with her husband, university teacher Zach, and their two-year-old daughter. But everything changed when Zach committed suicide on the same night one of his students vanished.

Five years later, just when Mia is beginning to heal, stranger Alison walks into her life, saying her husband didn't kill himself. Fragile, slight Alison leads Mia on a path into Zach's past, and Mia begins to think she never really knew her own husband.

As the secrets revealed get darker, Alison becomes harder to read, and Mia starts to wonder - why is Alison so keen to help? And then a piece of the puzzle appears in an impossible place, and Mia has to ask, is she losing her mind, or should she be afraid for her life?

An absolutely enthralling psychological thriller about obsession and buried secrets, with a brilliant twist. Fans of The Girl on the Train, Behind Closed Doors and Gone Girl will be hooked.

This is one of those audible experiences where my mind wandered while listening. Slow beginning, slow middle, slow end. None of the characters were likable, and there was so much "filler" that added nothing to the plot. Several parts didn't add up, either - and the denouement featured "reveals" that were in direct contradiction to the groundwork laid earlier.

The narration was very good, however. Both women made the best of the mediocre material they were dealt.

Boring - Predictable

Not bad, but just don’t like amateur sleuthing. Just go to the police already! It gets tedious.

It was a lot of “I’ve got to find out what happened” posturing about, and not enough ACTUALLY finding out!

The twisty ending just made me want to go back and find more loop holes.

Annoyed

What a shocking ending, never saw it coming! Both narrators we very good. Would be great if there was a second book.

Shocking!

I remember reading some of the reviews before I bought this book, but decided to go for it anyway. Up until the last 2 seconds of the book (when it abruptly ended!), I was thinking - what were those people all up in arms about? This book has been pretty good! Then, I hear the man's voice saying "this has been an Audible recording" and thought... WAIT! WHERE IS THE LAST CHAPTER?? Someone else mentioned it seemed like the author just got tired of writing and called it quits. I agree! Another chapter is needed for proper closure. There is some closure to the mystery, but you're definitely left hanging in terms of closure / what happens next for the characters. This was a disappointment. For this reason, I'm not sure I'll read anything more by this author.

Enjoyable, but the ending was cut short!

I don't know if it's just the narration, format or content but this book is so reminiscent of Big Little Lies. The beginning is super slow so it took me a while to get into it. The final few chapters are really surprising.

Twisty a la Big Little Lies

A compelling story with relatable characters until the end which felt rushed making the story feel incomplete.
