About this listen

Silencing the Women: The Witch Trials of Mary Bliss Parsons is the true story of what happened to an early New England colonial Puritan woman settler who was too beautiful, too rich, and too outspoken for her times. Enmeshed in a web of jealousy and gossip, she struggled to overcome victimization by the harsh judgments of church, state, and gender expectations. How she survived in the fearsome wilderness of the Connecticut River Valley Massachusetts Bay Colony is a love story told by a descendant.

White European Men in Charge of Everything

I like the narrators voice, soft and unhurried. I like her subtle yet precise descriptions of Mary's experiences, and her view of women's roles during that period in history. As a direct descendant of more than one woman who died during the Salem witch hysteria, and having grown up in the Springfield area, I appreciate the history and research that went into creating this work.

An intriguing book!

Actually I came for this book because I’ve got to know it was written by the descendant of Mary Bliss Parsons. “There must be a lot of truth untold and deeper insight when reading words written by a latter generation about her ancestor”. As an Asian young girl with lots of, sort of, rebelling thoughts inside my mind but having to hold them back, I found myself in Mary at some aspects. And I believe many women will be the same as me. The incompetence of women, of the poor, and the strength in their souls have brought me to see how magnificient the human's mind can be in their worst situation.

It was interesting and inspiring too! Thank you so much, Mrs.Becker!
