About this listen

When a bomber targets the city he loves, Detective Kelly must decide how far he’ll go to stop them.

A blast rips through downtown Boston on an early October morning, and Detective Michael Kelly races to the scene. But before he can begin to make sense of the attack, another explosion sends shockwaves through the city.

Reeling, and desperate for answers, Kelly and his team begin a citywide manhunt. The only clue from the blast site leads Kelly to an inmate - who is less than eager to help.

As Kelly hones in on the forensics, his source reveals the killer’s next targets. Armed with this knowledge, Kelly and his team rush to get out ahead of the mysterious murderer.

But with the city at stake and the clock literally ticking, one wrong move could have catastrophic consequences.

Can Kelly catch the bomber before time runs out?

Novella stretched into a novel

I’ve enjoyed Brian Shea’s Boston Crime Series, but Sign of the Maker is easily the weakest of the first four books. Some of the elements found in the first three books, namely Michael Kelly’s personal life, are mostly absent here, and the book spends significant time describing in detail short-lived and/or minor characters. Given these books are available through Kindle Unlimited, I can’t help but wonder if the author was honoring contractual requirements in releasing this book. Still, the story is worthwhile enough, if a bit unrealistic even by the procedural genre’s standards—how many bombings would it take for the public to stay home, and wouldn’t there be an all hands on deck manhunt?—but 1/3 of the book could have been cut out without taking anything from it. Again, the first three books are good and I’ll happily read the next BCS book at some point; this one just didn’t do it for me.
