About this listen

They called her Lady Stewart when she was married to a British aristocrat. They called her Miss Cora when she ran a brothel in Florida. But she called herself Mrs. Crane when she asked Sherlock Holmes to locate her common-law husband, writer Stephen Crane, who'd gone missing in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. In their attempt to fulfil the lady's request, Holmes and Watson encounter a world of celebrity authors, terrorist bombings, and haunted manor houses. But it is only when Stephen Crane falls victim to a notorious blackmailer that the master detective and his partner find themselves face-to-face with cold-blooded murder. Under darkened skies, a solitary apparition stood brightly illuminated on the ship's gloomy deck. Or so it seemed. Cloaked in a long white raincoat - the same gleaming duster he'd worn in the face of Spanish gunfire at San Juan Heights - Stephen Crane looked for all the world like the ghost so many people thought he'd already become.

Such a great performance!

The narration was so well done, I almost didn't care that the story had a few problems! The number of voices in this one must've felt daunting, but Ben Carling was more than up to the challenge!! Well done!!

Great narration

Story was mediocre with lots of description rather than plot advancement. Narration, however, was amazing. Hard to believe this is just one narrator.

Get lost in the story....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook to anyone who enjoys an authentically told tale written and narrated in such a way as to allow the listening to become immersed in a fascinating world described with detail and emotion as if one were somehow involved. This ladies and gentlemen, is how a story should told.

What other book might you compare Sherlock Holmes and the Baron of Brede Place to and why?

I can't. Yet.

Which character – as performed by Ben Carling – was your favorite?

So far, Cora.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Very much so.

Any additional comments?

Astounding that one person could comprise each voice with such distinction and authenticity. It brings the listener into a world in which the story takes on a level of detail that could well have previously been outside the scope of merely reading to ones self. Mr. Carling does a phenomenal job! Just a few chapters remain. Can't wait!

For Holmes Fans

Daniel D. Victor continues to add tales to the Sherlock Holmes canon that would make Sir Doyle proud. With this audio book, Ben Carling brings each character to life, giving voice to the rich chracterizations written by the author. Another must read (listen) for fans.

An entertaining story in the vein of Doyle

Where does Sherlock Holmes and the Baron of Brede Place rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

If you are a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle you will find this book in the same style. It has a good pace and a familiar literary style. I was anxious for the story to continue and if anything was disappointed that it ended so soon.

The narration of the book was excellent. It definitely elevated the story with his ability to seamlessly transition between characters. I will be pleased to listen to Ben Carling read additional books.

Pretty Good Story, Great Performance

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book, with reservations. The story is pretty good, and the style is close to Doyle's. However, it does become repetitive after a point (if one more character ejaculates instead of any other verb, I may lose my mind).

Would you be willing to try another book from Daniel D. Victor? Why or why not?

Probably not. This one dragged after a bit and I became bored with it.

What about Ben Carling’s performance did you like?

Carling was amazing. When one character switch to another, the transition was seamless and obvious. There was never any confusion about which was speaking. The accents were consistent throughout, and the style was engaging. I would definitely listen to other books with this narrator. I've listened to a lot of audiobooks over the 12 years I've been a member of Audible, and I rank Ben Carling among the top three.

Another great performance

This performer makes the experience so enjoyable and places you into the story as if you were there experiencing it for yourself. This is my second book of this series and I did enjoy it, I will definitely listen to anything from this narrator!
