About this listen

It was never supposed to be this close. And of course she was supposed to win. How Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election to Donald Trump is the tragic story of a sure thing gone off the rails. For every Comey revelation or hindsight acknowledgment about the electorate, no explanation of defeat can begin with anything other than the core problem of Hillary's campaign - the candidate herself.

Through deep access to insiders from the top to the bottom of the campaign, political writers Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes have reconstructed the key decisions and unseized opportunities, the well-intentioned misfires and the hidden thorns that turned a winnable contest into a devastating loss. Drawing on the authors' deep knowledge of Hillary from their previous book, the acclaimed biography HRC, Shattered will offer an object lesson in how Hillary herself made victory an uphill battle, how her difficulty articulating a vision irreparably hobbled her impact with voters, and how the campaign failed to internalize the lessons of populist fury from the hard-fought primary against Bernie Sanders.

Moving blow by blow from the campaign's difficult birth through the bewildering terror of election night, Shattered tells an unforgettable story with urgent lessons both political and personal, filled with revelations that will change the way listeners understand just what happened to America on November 8, 2016.

End of a Long Journey.

Any additional comments?

Shattered is a well written and well performed account of the behind-the-scene 2015-2016 HRC election seen through the eyes of Clinton insiders. However, the book comes post of several allegations made by close Clinton supporters about Hillary’s many violent out-bursts, melt-downs, vulgar language, and gruel treatment towards her staff. For that reason, the author seems to have presented a watered-down version of these events. Perhaps a more thorough and bold book of this subject is yet to be written.

Very good book

I was not, and am not a supporter of HRC, and knew from the reviews that the authors were sympathetic towards her campaign. They were but that didn’t take away from the quality of the book and the insights it had to offer.

Another "what happened" re: Nov 8 2016

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

While there is no shortage of "How did we end up with Trump " books, this one is quite interesting in so far as it concentrates on the Clinton's team character, rather then trying to psychoanalyze the mood of the country. By no means, is it a complete and comprehensive picture, but neither it should be. Instead, in combination with something like Devil's bargain, you can really get a complete picture. How Trump was indeed perfect match to defeat Clinton and why.

Mainly about the primaries but still valid

Not a bad read at all...mostly about her battle in he primary and only a few chapters about the General election. Very insightful as to her hubris, and her teams shortcomings. I was really anticipating a little more though in regards to the general election failures, but all in all not bad.

A great listen.

I've been dying for Mark Halperin and John Heilmann to write a Game Change book about this election, and Shattered read just like what I would imagine it would be (minus details of the Trump campaign). This book is engaging, narrative, and the author seemed to have great behind the scenes access. I also appreciated that the author didn't inject opinion or partisanship either way, it was very factual and unemotional. The narrator was great, too.

Hillary Through Rose Colored Glasses

Full of great background information about the 2016 election, but unabashedly sympathetic toward Hillary Clinton. Virtually ignored any personal responsibility for her loss and described her as a paragon of virtue. Whenever Donald Trump was mentioned, it wouldn't have been surprising if villain music would have played in the background. An overarching theme was that if a person did not vote for Hillary, it was because he or she misunderstood her. Truth be told, Trump voters understood Hillary perfectly well.

Made for TV

How much analysis went missing to describe furniture, wardrobe, appearance, and ersatz psychoanalysis? Too much.

Interesting take on the Clinton election team

I thought this was an interesting book to listen to and well worth a credit.

The story itself was quite interesting. The writers were obviously sympathetic to the Clinton campaign, which made the anonymous accounts seem more valid.

The narrator was disappointing. The delivery was flat and generally delivered in a choppy monotone.

Awesome

Just proof she was not ready to lead. In decision at the highest levels and no to blame but herself.
