About this listen
Charlotte Anne Mattas longs to turn back the clock. Before her husband, Sam, went to serve his country in the war, he was the man everyone could rely on—responsible, intelligent, and loving. But the person who's come back to their family farm is very different from the protector Annie remembers. Sam's experience in the Pacific theater has left him broken in ways no one can understand—but that everyone is learning to fear.
Tongues start wagging after Sam nearly kills his own brother. Now when he claims to have seen men on the mountain when no one else has seen them, Annie isn't the only one questioning his sanity and her safety. If there were criminals haunting the hills, there should be evidence beyond his claims. Is he really seeing what he says, or is his war-tortured mind conjuring ghosts?
Annie desperately wants to believe her husband. But between his irrational choices and his nightmares leaking into the daytime, she's terrified he's going mad. Can she trust God to heal Sam's mental wounds—or will sticking by him mean keeping her marriage at the cost of her own life?
Debut novelist Janyre Tromp delivers a deliciously eerie, Hitchcockian story filled with love and suspense. Fans of psychological thrillers and historical fiction by Jaime Jo Wright and Sarah Sundin will add Tromp to their favorite authors list.

Joining the search, Wren stumbles upon the Coons cabin ruins and a rotting porcelain doll. But even more terrifying is seeing her name etched on the doll's foot like a sinister omen.

I dig. It's what I do. I'll literally use a shovel to answer a question. Some answers, though, have been buried too deep for too long. But I'll find those, too. And I know where to dig - the Blackwood Estate on the edge of the Mississippi Delta. Garrett Blackwood is the only thing standing between me and the truth. A broken man - one with desires that dance in the darkest part of my soul - he's either my savior or my enemy. I'll dig until I find all his secrets. Then I'll run so he never finds mine. The only problem? He likes it when I run.

Janyre knocked it out of the park.
I like being surprised, but too often I can guess an ending. Not this time! The few bits I guessed were for reasons different than I’d assumed. The writing is sharp, characters are lovable (or punchable), and above all the book made me FEEL. Genius. Can’t wait to read her newest one.

Sweet and suspenseful!
This was such a good listen. Really sweet characters and an interesting story line. The descriptive language really drew me in. I enjoy historical novels, especially about WW2. This one is set post war as a soldier comes home in rural America. It’s a perspective I haven’t heard and I really enjoyed it.

Wow!
First, what a listening pleasure! The narrators bring this wonderful story to life with all the heart and soul of the Quachita mountains. Second, what a story! The topic of PTSD is treated with insight and care. But the pairing of a vulnerable and fragile war hero with the dark underbelly of a town smothered by the mob, makes for complex twists and turns that leave not only the characters breathless but the reader, as well. I loved Shadows in the Mind’s Eye, and highly recommend it, especially in audio.

Janyre Tromp's skills as a writer are far beyond the expected mastery. Her story touches the heart and causes the reader to stop and think about their own lives. Very well done!

Best book of the year
This book really hit close to home for me, with my husband being a combat veteran, but I found it to be so genuine and heart wrenching, and ultimately uplifting. I love that Janyre Tromp didn’t shy away from the brokenness of the situation, but she illuminated the way to redemption as well. The faith arc was beautifully woven in and felt authentic as well.
I bought the book about half way through listening to the audiobook version, because I knew that I’d want the opportunity to flip through its pages. I really enjoyed the narration as well though, and I know this is a book I will come back to over and over again.

Historical fiction meets psychological thriller
Sam returns home from WWII a broken man haunted by the horrors of war. Life isn’t what it was and he wonders if the war isn’t still going on in his mind.
The story kept me engaged throughout. Janyre (autocorrected to Kanye) Tromp is a master storyteller. Great story. Great characters. Already preordered her next book!

Heartwarming and Heartwrenching
I know a book is good when I dream about the characters. This was that kind of book. Janyre Tromp addressed trauma from a few different perspectives with compassion and grace. I loved the characters and wanted the best for all of them. Even some of the villains were beautifully redeemed. The storyline held my interest and called me back for more. The narrators breathed life into the already well-developed characters. what a great read!
