About this listen
Sharon Garlough Brown tells the moving story of four strangers as they embark together on a journey of spiritual formation:
Hannah, a pastor who doesn't realize how exhausted she is.
Meg, a widow and recent empty-nester who is haunted by her past.
Mara, a woman who has experienced a lifetime of rejection and is now trying to navigate a difficult marriage.
Charissa, a hard-working graduate student who wants to get things right.
You're invited to join these four women as they reluctantly arrive at a retreat center and find themselves drawn out of their separate stories of isolation and struggle and into a collective journey of spiritual practice, mutual support and personal revelation.
Along the way, listeners will be taken into a new understanding of key spiritual practices and find tangible support for the deeper life with God.
If you want to travel this journey with others, you will find a group study guide and book club resources at sensibleshoesclub.com.

From New York Times best-selling author Charles Martin comes a radical retelling of the prodigal son story. Cooper O'Connor thought he could make it big as a musician, but he promptly lost it all. Can he repair his relationship with the father who never stopped calling him home? At the age of 18, musician and songwriter Cooper O’Connor took everything his father held dear and drove 1,200 miles from home to Nashville, his life riding on a six-string guitar and the bold wager that he had talent. It's time you learned from the legend of Honi the Circle Maker. When his land was drought-stricken in ancient times, Honi ha-M'agel drew a circle in the sand, stepped inside it, and wouldn't budge until God answered his petition for rain. Honi's story transformed author Mark Batterson's own experience with prayer and inspired him to document his journey to praying more powerful prayers in The Circle Maker.

God might seem silent right now. God’s people might seem not worth the wounds. But hold on as Natalie Runion embarks on a journey for all who are wandering, wondering, and wrestling. Together, we will move toward trusting God again, knowing that even though Christian community may fail us, the love of God never fails. When we say yes to God, we don’t say yes to church politics, ladder climbing, or burnout. We say yes to Jesus. We say yes to hope. We say yes to much that we can still embrace.

Story
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Story
Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

New insights with each listen
I've listened to this quite a few times. Each time, I gain more insights, because I listen during different seasons of my spiritual growth. I love the story, and I love how the author captures the distinctiveness of each character in a way that I see parts of my spiritual walk in each of them.
The narrator does a great job catching the essence of each character verbally. Each voice is spot on with each woman. My next step is to get the study guide.

How Great The Father's Love For Us
I loved everything about this book! I loved that it instills how much our Father God loves us and walks with us no matter where we are in our spiritual journey!

It takes you in a journey with it
It started out confusing because they jumped from one back story to the next. But soon it all wove together and made sense. A clever way to take the reader on the same journey with the ladies. Great story. Great message. Worth reading.

Highly recommended
A story about a friendship that develops among four very different women as they each pursue their individual friendships with God, their families, and even themselves.
Based on my own experience of meeting with a spiritual director, I’d say this story is an accurate picture of how spiritual direction works. Sensible Shoes illustrates not only the various forms of prayer that are often utilized, but also how God woos wounded people into a loving, intimate relationship with himself and others. And it reveals the internal dialogue and mental gymnastics we Christian women often go through in order to hide from each other, our painful past experiences, and our sins that we often refuse to see as sin. And it does all this without the sappy characters that are often found in formulaic “Christian women’s fiction.” Yay! The characters here are well drawn, multifaceted, and true to their own natures, even as they grow. I could relate to each of them in different ways.
Can’t wait to read the other books in this series!

Scriptural counseling
I liked the story line that became a realistic tutor to self introspection that not only could confirm real self healing or a guide to helping others

Realistic Application for my Life
The ending came too soon yanking my new friends from my daily listening. This book becomes a spiritual masterpiece for reflection and growth without the expectations of a workbook. Being privy to the characters unspoken fears and expectations has released me from feeling shame from some of my own secretive thoughts.
I cannot wait for book 2, and 3, and ….
