Awesome book

My girlfriend is a black woman and we read this book together. This book talks very well about the struggles of a black woman, the health issues, and that constant pressure to be 'strong' But this book, it's more than just laying out the hard truths. It's full of practical advice, real steps to take care of ourselves better. Loved the part about healing the inner child. It’s not just talk; it’s real tools to make a change. Totally recommended

This is something we all need!

“Self Care for Black Women” was such a good read (listen to)! I really appreciated all the real-life examples of women who sacrifice themselves and suffer to try to be that “strong black woman” but end up feeling alone, exhausted and emotionally depleted. It makes you feel like you are not the only one feeling this way. There are lots of tools and help in this book to bring back the strength and life that we all need as women. Very well written and narrated. Highly recommend.

Perfect Guide for Women

This is an outstanding audiobook that provides you with actionable ideas that will assist you in loving yourself, living in accordance with your beliefs and ambitions, and embracing your authentic self rather than always putting the needs of others before your own.
In addition, it is an excellent guide that offers women the tools they need to improve their self-confidence, recover from traumatic experiences, and not engage in self-sabotage. For ladies interested in prioritizing their health, I would strongly recommend listening to this audiobook.

Incredibly Powerful!

This is a special audiobook; it really strikes a chord of truth and honesty. I was very much touched by the narrator's delivery of the author's words. I was so moved by hearing the words spoken that black women must take care of themselves; they absolutely must. Black women have been asked to do so much, and have done so much more than anyone else for so long that they have completely given themselves away, deferring their own care to the care of those they love or work for or simply must interact with. I loved the analogy in the audiobook about how a mother would never let her child go hungry, or not eat healthy food, or get enough sleep, or get proper exercise, and so on and so on, yet that is exactly how she allows herself to be treated. Hearing these words and examples stopped me in my tracks and made me think. This audiobook certainly motivated me to take better care of myself and value myself more; so should you!

Wonderful Advice for Black Women–And Others Too

In this terrific book, the author’s goal is to help black women escape the unfortunate trope that the strong black woman must resiliently live for self-sacrifice and not ever for her own well-being. Using knowledge gained from many interviews, research (medical, psychological, and neuroscientific), and personal experiences, the author makes a compelling case that this and other stereotypes about black women–combined with societal misogyny and racism–generate anxiety and much worse negative mental health outcomes. The author also seeks to demystify self-care, stressing that it is not selfish but essential and that you are allowed to say no to others when you need to take care of yourself. She emphasizes and takes a deep dive into all aspects of self-care: emotional, mental, physical, social, spiritual, practical, and professional.

Many elements of this book elevate it above other self-help books, not least of which are each chapter’s relatable stories of real women’s experiences. The author further helps connect the dots between childhood experiences and one’s adult mindset. Chapters also include useful assessment exercises, thereby ensuring that the listener is a participant in her own self-care and healing. Moreover, while the author doesn’t shy away from calling out sexism and racism, she seeks to empower black women to reject stereotypes, love themselves in all their uniqueness, create a positive mindset, become assertive, set boundaries, and demand that others see them as individuals. With that said, anyone of any race or gender who has adopted the role of armor-clad superhero living exclusively for others can learn from and appreciate this book and its essential message.

The author’s tone is strong and compassionate, the research is thorough, and the advice is actionable. On top of that, the extraordinary narration perfectly captures the author’s voice.
