About this listen

The long-awaited, full-force autobiography of American punk music hero, Bob Mould.

Bob Mould stormed into America's punk rock scene in 1979, when clubs across the country were filling with kids dressed in black leather and torn denim, packing in to see bands like the Ramones, Black Flag, and the Dead Kennedys. Hardcore punk was a riot of jackhammer rhythms, blistering tempos, and bottomless aggression. And at its center, a new band out of Minnesota called Hüsker Dü was bashing out songs and touring the country on no money, driven by the inspiration of guitarist and vocalist Bob Mould. Their music roused a generation.

Became an obsession.

I like books about musicians and music. Although I wasn't fully knowledgable of his music, I became intrigued by his story. The book took a lot of twists and turns that I didn't expect. Very interesting.

More Bob than you have a right to.

One of my favorite musicians writes an autobiography. This hasn't always worked out too well. Getting assistance from Michael Azerrad gave me some positive feelings about this one when it was coming down the road, and it turned out even better that I had anticipated. Well written, this look at Bob Mould's personal history and life in music really doesn't have a dull spot. He doesn't beat you over the head with information, he keeps things moving in the same way a good friend tells you a story about something that just happened to them.

Authors reading their own work is always hit or miss. Here, it absolutely hits. His relaxed reading style really makes you feel like someone is reading to you, just you, and not reading woodenly from pages.

Husker Du fans, Bob's solo fans, Sugar fans, rejoice! This book will satisfy any urge to glean information about those time-frames in his life. That he opens up and shares more than anyone would expect is just the icing on that cake you've heard about. Highly recommended.

thorough reflections on a long career

I enjoyed the book. Mould doesn't come across as a great guy, but he does sound like an honest one. I hope he finds the contentment that seems elusive to him.

Bob raw, but as a narrator...?

Would you listen to See a Little Light again? Why?

Nope!

What didn’t you like about Bob Mould’s performance?

While the story of Bob's life was fascinating and gut-wrenching at times, his performance as narrator took me out of the book way too often. You could tell at way too many times in the book that he really didn't want to be reading it. If it's possible to hear someone roll their eyes, it's found within this book.

Any additional comments?

It's tough giving a book as open and honest as this a so-so review but my main complaints are not about the quality of the writing or of the subject matter but listening to Bob read his own work. If I was writing a review of just the book, it would be different but this is a review of the audiobook, so being specific to that is what I'm striving to do.

Good listen for long time fans or new comers

As a long time fan of his music, it was interesting to hear the stories in Bob's own words and voice. The emotions good and bad in his voice made it better for me vs. just reading the text. You could tell that certain parts of the book were hard for him to read, but that is what got my wife into it. She didn't know his work, but after we listened for hours on a recent vacation she was hooked on how his life went along talking back/giving advice multiple times during stories about relationships.

Excellent history of one of music's good guys

Honest and compelling account of Bob's life read by the author. Very introspective and detailed, a story of redemption. Highly recommended.
