About this listen

Dragon Raider

Will adapting to a changing world make one young woman lose touch with where she came from?

Far from the kingdom of Torvald, on the Western Isles near the coast, sea dragons rule the skies. Lila is the daughter of the Raider leader, destined to take his place one day aboard their plundering ships. Her people value only what shiny trinkets they can get their hands on, but she aspires to much more than that: Lila wants the Raiders to become Dragon Mercenaries, dragon riders who help protect merchant fleets and navies from attack. Her father Kasian is skeptical, but a young monk named Danu - with a quest of his own - comes bearing a prophecy claiming that Lila is the lost heir of Roskilde, a born Dragon Rider.

With Danu’s guidance, Lila finds the unruly dragon she’s destined to bond with - but the mismatched pair soon learn that much more than just their futures is at stake.

Dragon Crown

In order to embrace her true nature, a young dragon rider must accept who she is - and where she came from.

Lila knows her people’s way of life is dying, but trying to get Raiders to become Dragon Mercenaries is no easy task. Although the world around them is changing, many among the Raiders still cling to the old ways of piracy. When a desperate message arrives from the West Witches, Lila and her new friend, the eccentric, unseasoned magician Danu, must risk a mission to the island of Sebol to learn what they can of the new danger they face, a threat that menaces all the Western Isles.

To face it, Lila must leave her Raider past behind and become the leader Danu knows she was born to be. Knowing the crown of Roskilde holds the key to her destiny, and perhaps the key to defeating the deadly threat that is upon them, Lila must seize it. But to do so, Raiders and dragons will have to learn to trust each other - and Lila - as she leads the charge. Can Lila let go of fear and doubt and face the future, or will the only life she’s known be destroyed?

Dragon Prophecy

From humble beginnings, a heroine will be forged in fire.

Forced to retreat from the Army of the Dead with her remaining force of Raiders and their dragons, Lila begins to despair that her people will ever be anything but a ragtag band. Even wielding the fabled crown of Roskilde, she cannot unite the Raiders - it seems she is not the one to fulfill Danu’s cherished prophecy.

But Danu isn’t giving up yet. Though he suspects the evil Havick has obtained an ancient book that will allow him unspeakable power, help may come from an unlikely source: the Dragon Riders of Torvald. These brave warriors could be their last chance to defeat the evil of Lars and Havick - but they are also the Raiders’ sworn enemies. Now, Lila, Danu, Crux, and their friends have no choice but to make a perilous journey into hostile territory to seek allies against the darkness threatening to consume them all. To save her friends, Lila must become the legendary leader she was born to be.

Dragon Raiders

Lila is the daughter of the pirate chieftain. She has a dream of adding dragon riders to their strength. No one could resist them if they have dragons. She has found that there is a nesting dragon on a nearby island. If she can get those eggs, the raiders can raise them. During this attempt, Lila meets Danu. He is an apprentice mage who has been studying a prophecy that will put the islands into turmoil.

This contains all three books of the Dragon Raider trilogy. The books are very well done and this is easily worth a credit. My only complaint is that I am confused about how this book relates with some of the author’s other work.

I did receive a review copy of this book on my request for an honest review.

I love a series that's continuous

I was so excited to see that this series was being offered all together. I had previously read some of the series, but having them back to back with no need to wait for the next title really offers the listener a greater experience. This author is a great and creative writer. I love the characters, dragons, setting, and all the magical elements. I would absolutely recommend this series. I was given a code to listen to this series, but chose to leave this review on my own.

Magic, dragons, prophecies...

Prophesies are a dangerous thing... And they make you wonder: do they come to pass because you try to fulfill them or do they come to pass because your attempts at preventing them from happening are the first step to their realization? It's a vicious circle and a paradox that a lot of fantasy stories (most of them, really) are built on...Some better than others...

The 'Sea Dragons' trilogy follows the tropes of a good fantasy in a great way: there's a lost princess brought up by pirates; there's a prophesy about her that has been fulfilling itself step by step, literally; there's a young monk, a mage in training whose powers are greater than anyone could have imagined; and there are dragons, lots of them... There also is the Great Evil that our heroes must destroy to save the world... We all know these from countless other fantasy books - the trick is to take them, make them your own and weave a story that will keep the readers (listeners) glued to the pages of the book. Ms Richardson did it - you just can't stop listening (reading), can't put the book down; you just have to know what will happen to Lila and Danu and their dragon-friend Crux.
All three books have really fast-paced plots, with lots of action, fights, battles, described in vivid pictures... But what I like most is that all the characters, and especially Lila and Danu, undergo changes; they grow up, mature, make mistakes and learn from them, and not one of them feels unreal. Yes, some of the decisions they make, some things they do may irritate you, make you angry or disgusted, but all of these make them feel true, make you feel connected to them, make you want to follow them to the end of the story.
So all you fantasy fans there, grab that book and have over 25 hours of a wonderful adventure :)

As for the narration, I generally liked it a lot; the individual characters were recognizable, the dialogues really well read. I would only like Ms Douglas to read a bit faster - it's a really long book, you know:) (And I think I just got used to speeding up narrations generally...:) but that's me, for most people the pace of the narration would probably be just about right).

prophecy

a prophecy leads to a raider becoming more than just what she thought she was content (for the most part) with. I enjoyed listening to this trilogy and would recommend listening and/or reading this series.

Narrator is TERRIBLE

I can't even finish listening to this. There is constant long awkward pauses, she constantly changes how she's talking when it should be a continues narrative. It sounds like she's whispering the entire time instead of just talking. Its just so unbearable. I made it to chapter 3 and I want my money back. I don't even know where the story is headed, can't stand to continue listening.

Narration leaves much to be desired

Story is fun, a decent young adult read. Narrator has a very distracting cadence, and poorly concealed edits.

What an adventure of a story!!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This series is absolutely incredible. With all that happens you wonder what will happen next, although I don't think the prophecy was needed to make the story. At times I was really annoyed by how much they were trying to make sure the prophecy would come true. It should have been used as a guideline to follow but not be forced to make sure it would happen. Other than that, what an amazing series!! MC's are absolutely incredible!!

Fun Dragon Fantasy

So I have to say that the first book was by far the best of the three and my favorite. Perhaps it just set my standards too high for the next books. I thought book two was great but seemed a bit more scattered and confused. By book three the narrator was really getting into the series and branching out on the characters voices, the only one I didn't care for was Lila's Dragon- he sounded more like a long time smoker than the musical sound the author descibed. All in all I was just a bit let down by book three it ended a bit too predictably and yet undone. The overall series will definitely appeal and please those who like the dragon fantasy genre.
