Sandokan es un príncipe de Borneo que ha jurado vengarse de los ingleses que le robaron su trono y asesinaron a toda su familia. Desde entonces se dedica a la piratería con el nombre de El Tigre de Malasia y cuenta para ello con la fidelidad de su tripulación compuesta por malayos y dayakos de Borneo.
Sandokan tiene su refugio en Mompracén donde organiza sus planes e incursiones para conseguir justicia. Cuenta con la ayuda de su lugarteniente Yáñez, el pirata portugués y de su buen amigo el bengalí Tremal Naik.
Cuando Tremal-Naik y su hija Darma son apresados por sir James Moreland, Yáñez consigue un poderoso barco de guerra con el que primero liberar a sus amigos y después hacer una guerra sin cuartel a los ingleses.
