About this listen

Michael stared at the sand as nervous sweat slid down his brow. The nagra were everywhere, nesting beneath the polluted ground, waiting to drag down the unwary. "And it only takes one false step," he whispered. A tough break, but that was the life of a Culver cleanser. Dig, scrap, disarm, and hope to return from a work detail with enough fingers to still count your pay. But as with any risk there are great rewards. Even in the Culver Waste, a land fouled by a decade-long war and plagued with poisonous elemental traps and vicious predators, treasures untold remain hidden beneath the toxic sands. Relics, scrap, weapons, even entire cities...all abandoned and forgotten after the last great magic war swallowed the land whole. But not everything can remain lost forever. And when Michael Carter and his work crew unearth a mysterious bunker while on a cleansing run, they soon learn some things are best never found again.

Draws you in and doesn't let go

I read the print edition last year and loved it. The deep story line, tons of characters and well written style really draws you in. But hearing the story again, narrated by a fantastic actor with an awesome British accent made it even better the second time around. Check out this audiobook. You won't be disappointed.

A Solid 4-Star Read

I really enjoyed this tale. I felt it was a fun take on the fantasy genre. I liked the cast of misfits that we follow throughout this wasteland. The author did a fine job in creating a new world and a band of colorful characters - some of whom are despicable. Also, as an avid audiobook listener, I thought this actor did a terrific job reading this story. It seems that the best performers are always British!
Check this little gem out.

Enthralling.

I really enjoyed this one. Strange worlds reminiscent of Frank Herbert, with tones of Indiana Jones mixed with fantasy and strange creatures.

Audio work was solid and authentic. The voice helps paint the world the way I think is appropriate and elegant.

Enthralling story that introduced me to strange and thought out worlds. The story kept me wanting more and it has a good setup for a sequel.

I'd recommend it to people who like strange worlds, and the idea of magic being turned on its side in ways I've never been explained before. Lots of good ideas here.

Horrible.

I tried to like this book but, it was just too hard the plot development is worse than a elementary school essay. Every time the author decides to advance it he just brings in hew characters to solve the problems. And he continued to bring in new elements until the last chapter.
