About this listen

"You call him a Dumb Ox; I tell you that the Dumb Ox will bellow so loud that his bellowing will fill the world." (Albertus Magnus)

Dubbed the "Dumb Ox" by his classmates for his shyness, Saint Thomas Aquinas proved to be possessed of the rarest brilliance, justifying the faith of his teacher, Albertus Magnus, and sparking a revolution in Christian thought. Chesterton's unsurpassed examination of Aquinas' thinking makes his philosophy accessible to listeners of any generation.

Etienne Gilson, the 20th century's foremost authority on Aquinas, has said of this work, "I consider it as being without possible exception the best book ever written on Saint Thomas. Nothing short of genius can account for such an achievement."

profile of the man

GK Chesterton is certainly a man of Witt the offer is what I think is a Hian dialectic of synthesis and antithesis. But nevertheless, his continued seesaw of opposites, end up becoming more prattle than prose.

The one thing that GK Chesterton cannot accept is doubt and the concept of probability. St. Thomas Aquinas was so certain of the existence and goodness of God that this is the absolute basis from which he can launch an inquiry into concepts of rationality and facts.

The narrator is excellent. Copywriter in 1933 explains the high level of writing in this book. Of course with GK Chesterton as the author, I shouldn’t have expected anything else.

He tells you enough so you know who St Thomas was and what his thesis is. The authors humor is an extra treat

Are you tired of books that you labor to complete?
Try this one by GKC on St Thomas Aquinas.
You will be carried along on a journey of joy as you see this great saint through the brilliant eyes of GKC.
CS Lewis said that George Macdonald baptized his imagination... But it was Chesterton who Baptized his intellect.
If like me, you are looking for a book that reads at the speed of Holy Joy, this is the one.
And Derrick Perkins narration is a masterful bonus... Perkins captures every turn of GKCs wit and wisdom.
I just reformatted my phone so I had to download this gem again and Audible asked me for a review... So if you see an older review, fear not... I am not a bot, just a fan who is about to listen to this masterful distillation of the great Catholic Dynamic Duo [gkc and st thomas] for perhaps the fifteenth time...
If this review encourages one person to experience the joy I have received over the many many many hours I spent in the company of these two practical, down to earth geniuses of our faith... I will be blessed 🙏

Joy unspeakable 🤗🙏😇

I expected an interpretation of Thomistic thought and got instead an introduction to a friend. Thomas is a delightful man, and though I have a read a bit of his writing, I did not know these stories. Great fun to meet the man and see him interpreted to a world filled with Nazis.

Derek Perkins does an excellent job reading.

I highly recommend this book.

Delightful reading of a wonderful book

It is hard to make a bad G K Chesterton reading. This one was OK. Good enunciation and pace, but little heart.

Great material. Average narrator.
