West Berlin, 1979. Helen Abell oversees the CIA's network of safe houses, rare havens for field agents and case officers amidst the dangerous milieu of a city in the grips of the Cold War. Before the day is out, she witnesses a second unauthorized encounter, one that will place her in the sight lines of the most ruthless and powerful man at the agency. Her attempts to expose the dark truths about what she has witnessed will bring about repercussions that reach across decades and continents into the present day, when, in a farm town in Maryland, a young man is arrested for the double murder of his parents, and his sister takes it upon herself to find out why he did it.

Narrator was pretty good but the story just didn’t hold my interest. I found my mind wandering constantly and had to repeat a chapter more than once. Despite playing it back I still didn’t understand the pond business connection.

Not My Preferred Genre
I thought I would try something different so picked this book up on a Daily Deal. It was worth the $4.00 I paid for it. Some tense & exciting moments here & there.
The Narrator/Author did a great job, contrary to some other reviews. I enjoyed the narration most about this book.
Like I said, this isn’t my preferred genre so that’s probably why I wasn’t crazy about the story. It was ok though.

Hard start….
At first I was thinking about giving up on this book because it was so hard to follow. But I’m glad I didn’t because it was an excellent story.

Worth listening
Was entertaining and well done, but so often required to listener to suspend belief in reality to continue. Overall worthwhile

Wonderful
I am regular audible listener and hate to admit that once I find an author I like I listen to all their books , usually in order . But this time I deviated and pick a new author and sure do not regret it. Safe Houses is a terrific story , different than most spy mysteries . I now have a new and prolific author who has written a number of books . Fesperman also narrates Safe Houses and does an excellent narration. I think everyone will enjoy this one .

Excellent story!

Great story & audible reader
Dan Fesperman tells a good story and narrates it perfectly. Enjoy this spy story played out in different time periods.

Attention Keeper
Good story line, believable tradecraft, expert narration....all in all an enjoyable audio experience. Recommend his "The Double Game" and "Layover in Dubai". Equally, good reads....

Excellent Spy Story
Great plot. The story has two storylines separated by 40 years expertly interwoven with related characters. Well worth the investment of time and credits. Look forward to more books from this author.
