By: Serial Productions
  • Summary

  • S-Town is a podcast hosted by Brian Reed from Serial Productions, a New York Times company. The story follows a man named John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks Brian to investigate the son of a wealthy family who's allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But when someone else ends up dead, the search for the truth leads to a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man's life. There’s a S-Town in everywhere, and yet…not many John’s.

When you listen to enough podcasts about life and true crime, you realize that some problems are universal. That said? Oh, there’s no place like home! As a life long resident of the South (in MS and AL), the author/narrator introduced me to people I haven’t met yet. Lol. I was pulled into the story hearing John’s first rant. All I could think was, “Oh this is gonna be good!” It was. It was a funny, sad, very thought-provoking, fascinating portrait of a man, who he was and what he meant to others. Beautifully done.

Respect

This review is for Owen for the trust he gives to speak about his life like he did.

Almost said “NOPE”

The first 15 minutes almost had me turn it off. I have ties to Alabama, and the initial portrayal smacked of what all liberals think of Southerners, particularly those from rural areas. And that is that all Alabamians are uneducated, homophobic, xenophobic, and racist. I know otherwise. I also know that Alabama has the best college football team in the country. That aside, once I pushed through….I was hooked. What a compelling and intriguing story! It’s one of those where you mourn the ending….even though you kind of KNOW the ending. Bravo!

A MUST LISTEN!

This podcast ruined all other podcasts for me. There is none other like it. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and one hell of a story. If you don’t like this podcast there’s something missing in your soul.

So interesting, tragic, & yet you can’t not binge this. It’s strange & beautiful, much like John himself.

Fabulous.

Listen to this. It’s great. I didn’t have any expectations but I was not disappointed. And I’m kinda hard to please when it comes to these types of things.
