About this listen
Rumpole defends Charles Hearthstoke against charges of keeping bawdy houses, in the form of his chain of massage parlors. The case has become quite a scandal since many customers were prominent members of the community and, to Rumpole's astonishment, paid with credit cards. Guthrie Featherstone, who sought a massage for an injury, now thinks that may be identified as one of the patrons, and Rumpole cunningly arranges for him to preside at Hearthstoke's trial.

Story
Rumpole unenthusiastically accompanies Hilda and her cousin to a very fashionable restaurant. Rumpole hates the ostentatious ambiance and pretentious food with its scant portions. He requests steak and kidney pudding. Jean Pierre O'Higgins, the owner, is insulted that Rumpole would expect him to prepare such low-class dishes. Suddenly, pandemonium strikes when a live mouse jumps out from the serving dish at another table. Unfortunately, the diners are Erskine-Brown with an attractive colleague that he's romancing.

Editorial reviews
Rumpole, the beloved old British barrister, familiar to listeners from the British TV series, this time, in Rumpole and the Judge's Elbow, defends Charles Hearthstoke, the sleazy owner of a chain of massage parlors, accused of running "bawdy houses". John Mortimer's Rumpole, performed impeccably by the ever-droll Leo McKern, as usual outwits the court by convincing Guthrie Featherstone, an erstwhile client of Hearthstroke's for an elbow injury, to preside over the trial as Judge. With wit, mystery, and a clear sense of the absurd, Rumpole entertains listeners once again.

Every year, Caroline Reed takes a trip with her best friend, Esme Lamont. They’re usually accompanied by their spouses - but this year, everything’s changed. Esme has just gone through a bitter divorce, and Caroline's wondering if her own marriage is reaching its breaking point as she and her husband, John, cope with the discovery that their son has been abusing drugs. Still, the inseparable duo books a weeklong stay at a beach-front home in Shoreham, Florida, inviting Esme’s brother, Nick, and his new husband. An Audio Landmark
As an audio book lover I have found Rumpole read by 'the man himself' the late Leo McKern to be one of the landmarks in the audio landscape.
Is there are more entertaining audio experience than those chronicling Rumploles great wins at the Old Bailey as he teases out some gentle mystery or his lows as his co-inhabitants in chambers, indifferent to Rumpole's talents, pursue their own intrigues, not mention his at times forlorn relationship with his wife 'she who must be obeyed'? A pure delight.

Excellent Rumpole, very enjoyable and entertaining
I love Rumpole read by Leo McKern and this is almost as good as any, and is very entertaining to listen to. Fun story, brilliantly written and narrated, good to listen to over and over.

Hysterical, as usual
There are some Rumpole books narrated by others, but only the Leo McKern versions are the "real" Rumpole.
