About this listen

Following on from his bestselling novels A Year in the Wild and Back to the Bush, James Hendry returns to the setting of Sasekile Private Game Reserve for another tale that takes the listener behind the scenes with the MacNaughton brothers, Angus and Hugh. It is four and a half years since Angus’s last year in the wild when he was newly appointed to the position of head ranger at Sasekile. Much has happened in the interim.

In Return to the Wild there is high drama, much hilarity and close encounters with wildlife, fire and human incompetence as Angus unexpectedly returns to Sasekile to take on the training of a motley group of would-be game rangers with his usual stark but eloquent honesty. Alongside him, Hugh manages the lodge and its colourful staff with a varying degree of competence as events lurch from mishap to potential catastrophe.

Whether you are a fan of the MacNaughtons’ previous misadventures or a listener new to their story, Return to the Wild is a highly amusing, engaging and heartfelt listen.

A Wild Read- LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!

Loved every second of it... hoping another adventure with Angus will follow. Such an enjoyable read and the magnificent James Hendry narrating it is priceless.

Wonderful!

This man's writing about my favorite subject of the African wild and all that goes alongside its wonder can make me laugh hilariously, listen with great interest and even sob with emotion from the weaving of the story so brilliantly one doesn't notice how much they are wrapped up as if they are present in the authors imagination. This should be made into a movie!

Another Gem from James Hendry

Love this 3rd novel written and narrated by Mr. Hendry. His humor makes me laugh out loud. The Safari adventures viewed from a guide’s pt of view were informative and, at times, sobering. Looking forward to re-reading the first two novels. And, of course, selfishly hoping for a fourth novel.

Perfect Outline of a Movie to Follow!!

I loved this book so much that I couldn't stop thinking about how great it would be if they made it into a movie. The details were so thorough that I created a perfect version of the characters in my mind and what they each would look and sound like. The voice impressions were a huge help. It is very well written and I didn't want it to end! I will be reading the others, as I did not know there were any others.

Loved it

I fell in love with the way James Hendry could string a sentence together on his Wild Earth safari’s. This book was no different.
Loved it.

Wonderful writing! Great characters! So fun to listen to

I completed my first South African safari this year, not because it was something that was on my bucket list, but because friends who live in South Africa insisted I must do. What a great surprise! It was the trip of a lifetime! Upon returning I read A Year in the Wild and had to immediately follow with the Return. Both were great books! Both books kept my real life experience alive! The nuance in both writing is great, Mr. Hendry truely captures the spirit of the land. Laugh out loud funny at times! Also reinforced how I wished I would have paid more attention to the birds on safari! At times, while reading this bookI felt like I was once again in my vehicle with our ranger and tracker just sitting parked watching the elephants or the lions or the giraffes… or driving up an unbelievable steep hill to find the leopards. I hope Mr. Hendry is able to write additional stories Ike these in South Africa!
