About this listen

From the legendary author of A Walk Among the Tombstones comes this gripping tale of sudden endings and new beginnings.

When a man called Bill spots a sign in a restaurant window, he grabs his carry-on and gets off his bus. Within an hour he's got himself a job as a short-order cook, and a start on a whole new life in Cross Creek, Montana. Things just fall into place. He applies for a library card, and the next thing you know he's having dinner with the librarian. One thing leads to another, and he can see a whole new life stretching out before him.

Resume Speed

Great story by Lawrence Block an author who I think really does not get the credit he deserves. He has so many great stories both long and short over his decades long career. This short story is no exception, it has great well developed characters with a smooth flowing storyline that hooks you from beginning to end. Theo does a fine job of narrating.

Interesting book

Hmmmmm.....well, I can say that this was a slow paced but interesting book. All the characters and how the information was coming out was very well done and kept my interest. Theo Holland narrated the book so well that the characters came to life and I followed in their story as if I was there watching from afar. I must say that the ending left me hanging and wishing it wouldn't have went that way. I want to say a lot more but don't want to spoil it for everyone. Overall it was a great compilation between Block and Holland and I enjoyed it.

Narration great.

Narration by Theo was the added bonus to this interesting slow pace novella. Given audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

I Did Not Want It To End!

What did you love best about Resume Speed?

A great novella was made magnificent by the Narrator - Theo Holland - who I do not think I ever heard before, but his reading, pacing, characterizations, etc. were spot on and truly brought me into the story.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Oh this is a beauty. The plot unfolds well paced, I might say slowly, but only as a positive attribute. The story has a fellow arriving into a small town, getting a job, finding a place to live and showing himself to be a good guy. Yet, as the plot unfolds, so do the parts of the story that answer the mysterious question of why the protagonist is in the town the is and from whence he comes. The author's pacing and slow revealing of information is what kept me on my seat.

What about Theo Holland’s performance did you like?

Everything. Mr. Holland had a wonderful way of entering into the story in a way that invited me in. The voice characterizations of the novella's cast members were so well chosen and executed that I could easily immerse myself in the story. He was able to navigate that fine line, of not being disconnected to the text, nor chewing the scenery with it. Is reading/performance was just the right balance.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The conclusion did, but I will not say more, so as not to spoil the novella.

Any additional comments?

I will never know if I would have enjoyed this so much if I had only read the eBook. Since I listened to it all, I not cannot imaging reading it without, at least, hearing the dialogue read and Theo Holland read it. Because of Lawrence Block's fine writing, and Theo Holland's fine reading, I wish this was not a novella, but a novel; a really lengthy tome. I did not want this to end!

Caught in a vicious cycle.

What made the experience of listening to Resume Speed the most enjoyable?

Rooting for the main character to 'get it right' this time.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Resume Speed?

When Bill is deciding whether or not to purchase the diner.

What about Theo Holland’s performance did you like?

Once again, Theo Holland delivers an astounding performance.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Will it be any different this time?

Any additional comments?

Can't wait for the next collaboration between Lawrence Block & Theo Holland!

First Chapters of a Longer Work

Reasonably engaging, then just stops. This felt like the first couple chapters of s longer book, one where there was some payoff for your attention.
