About this listen

No matter what the options are, Mike, a rough-tongued, reclusive southerner, with little patience for people, would rather be fishing. Every time he puts his hand on his rod, the phone rings with a new job to exterminate a monster. Rather Be Fishing follows Mike on nine such delays as he battles a range of challenging creatures. His clients find themselves plagued by everything from well-known foes like vampires and werewolves to more rare nuisances like moss men and chupacabra. Adding to his headaches are the not-so-supernatural clients he needs to deal with in order to get a free day on the lake.

Rather be fishing

Well written, and a lot of fun to listen to. It would be easy for a book like this to quickly become boring, but it doesn't. Mike is a character you like, and often forget that he isn't real. When a writer can do that, that's pure talent, and I hope we get see more of Mike's adventures soon.

Rather Be Fishing

This book was very entertaining. For Mike to be a monster hunter, he is very silly. I caught myself giggling many times throughout this book just by the way he interprets things. The monsters were very interesting as well. I loved the take that the author had on some of these and the way they were described was great. I had no problems picturing them in my head. I hope to here more of Mike’s travels and jobs in the future.

A Great Listen!!

I was really sad when this book came to an end. The characters had become like good friends and I just wanted the book to keep going so I could hang out with them. Nathan Glondys does a great job giving each character a distinct voice that is perfect for them. And, Lucretia Stanhope did a lovely job in the writing. The characters have life and depth and are well worth listening to. I also like the format. Each chapter became a short monster story that when taken together becomes a snapshot in the life of this monster hunter. Well done.

Great set of stories

The story:

None of the supernatural beings--werewolves, vampires-- were anything like what you'd normally read about. For example, the vampire is just a spirit, the werewolf person magically projects his consciousness into the body of a real wolf. So, essentially, all supernatural naturals creatures (based on this author/story) are simple spirits. That's kind of sad.

I do love a story that's supposed to be funny and actually turns out funny, as in makes me laugh. I was chuckling throughout this one. In the end, these were some great short stories.

The narrator:

As soon as I heard him I thought of Micheal Keaton as Beetlejuice. While I liked his voice he spoke in a stilted way, for example, (made-up dialogue) "'I'm going to the museum with you,' .....(much longer pause than normal).....she said." This was the case whenever he/she/I said. It seemed maybe he has a breathing issue which causes him to have to constantly catch his breath. That's the best way to explain it.

When he did female voices...Wow! It seemed like a completely different person was taking over given his (assume) natural voice is so gruff sounding.

Not sure where this audiobook stands regarding how many he already had under his belt, but I can see this narrator going on to becoming a great one.
------------------------
The Devil's Play Place park was where the vampire/mummy used to do magic tricks? Who turned him into a mummy? How was the vampire created?

The vampire is in a mummies body and can't go too far from the body. This body was in a museum. Yet, a sign of a vampire being in this town seemed like something new. So unless the mummy was only recently brought to town, what had been going on?
-------------------
When he goes hunting for the zombies, why did he and his group not simply get them when they knew where they were buried? Instead, they waited for them to wake up.

Love being able to hear someone give the character a voice and hearing it "acted" out.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I burst out in laughter many times!

Any additional comments?

This book was absolutely captivating! It's one of those can't put it down, need to finish kind of books. The humor is spot on, the monsters are scary and Mike the main character reminds me of a certain someone I know who just can't seem to catch a break! I absolutely loved every bit of this book, it was a real rollercoaster of fun. Each chapter added a new and crazy adventure and the ending was just too wonderful! <3 <3 <3

Hysterica Characters, Great Paranormal Adventure

What made the experience of listening to Rather Be Fishing the most enjoyable?

Oh my gosh, this book is a riot! I took this book with me on my walks, and my entire neighborhood must think I'm nuts, watching me walking down the street laughing my head off! What makes it so funny is the commentary from the main character who really is quite the character. That's not to say this book is all laughs, there are some scary scenes as well. Some of the monsters he's hunting nearly get the best of him a few times and this leads to a few tense situations. Great stories, hysterical commentary and strong characterization puts this on my list as one of my favorite repeat reads. The narrator was so perfect. He really sold this book

What other book might you compare Rather Be Fishing to and why?

It's really a unique, one of a kind.

Which character – as performed by Nathan Glondys – was your favorite?

Main character. So funny! Love his observations

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Mostly it was the main character's commentary.

Any additional comments?

I'd highly recommend this book on a car trip, it's light mood and engaging episodes could brighten up the dullest moments. I'll take it with on my next long trip.

Quite entertaining

If you like fun, entertaining monster stories, this book is for you. I wasn't looking for this book when perusing the club I belong to offering free books in exchange for reviews, but I thought it sounded interesting and liked the reviews I read. I'm an author myself and know how important reviews are for books, so, I gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the story. Rather be Fishing is the perfect title for the book, because who wouldn't rather be fishing than chasing monsters? It's really a series of short stories about monster hunting. The star of the story is witty and entertaining with, in my opinion, just the right amount of detail to make the story interesting. The narrator has a gravelly voice that sounds a bit to me like Beetle Juice. He fit the character perfectly. I'm glad I took the time to listen.

great book and a great narrator.

I purchase this book thinking that it was a fishing book given the title. I was not disappointed when it turned out to be a Monster hunting book and the Monster Hunter would just rather be fishing. It was a great book though I'm glad I didn't return it after realizing that it wasn't actually a fishing book

It's different

I didn't care for this book. Between the story line and narration. The ending was terrible.
