About this listen

A short story collection including two very personal glimpses into the author's life and a number of westerns.

"Edd Voss is an American original. His unique voice rises from the heartland, and his diverse anthology of stories is as sprawling and charming as is the vast country that he explores from the cab of his 18-wheeler." (Robert Bidinotto, author of the best selling Dylan Hunter novels)

Amazing collection of stories!

The way the author captures the feeling of seeing your wife after a long time apart, or the feeling of the importance of family and connection is amazing. The narrator is spot on for this book and had a gravelly experience to his tone (he sounds similar to the actor Sam Elliot). I really connected with this book as I often move around a lot for work and otherwise, and the way Edd Voss has written this collection, it is easy to get immersed.

A Must Have

This has been one of the most enjoyed items in my library to date. The structure is such that you can easily imagine yourself in the midst of the story’s. I also enjoy the fact that my imagination and emotions are stirred while listening. I highly recommended getting these stories.

Neat collection of short stories

Rambling is a really neat collection of modern day westerns.
Like all collections some you'll love others less so.
But overall it is a great read.

Great batch of stories!

Every so often, more so lately since I seem to be in a rut with the stories I’ve been picking, I like to read or listen to something I typically wouldn’t. That was the case here. While the first couple of stories had what I felt too much narrative, overall, I really enjoyed these stories. I swear whenever I read or listen to a book about the west, whether, in a present setting or past, it’s like a breath of fresh air. I can’t explain it. I’m a big fan though.

I did find some questionable writing in several of the stories. For example, “His left HAND had been at the top of THE PAGE he attempted to write on when he lifted his right HAND for a reason he could no longer recall. Realizing that he would never find the point where he left off, he shoved the pad from him. Using both HANDS to pull it back toward himself, with his left HAND and the pencil in his right hooked the other. It occurred to him that instead of keeping his left HAND at the top of THE PAGE, he could follow along with his right HAND to keep his place on THE PAGE. He could also use the sharpened point of the pencil to make an indentation on THE PAGE to further indicate his stopping point.” Maybe it was just me but I felt that scene was way too long especially with repetitiveness. Here’s another example, “They can see it, he said, just because he started snoring SOFTLY. Looking over his shoulders he could see that Jenny was crying SOFTLY.” Or “Rudy looked like he had been hit by A lightning.” There were other examples but I was driving the majority of the time while listening so it wasn’t easy to keep notes.

I think my favorite story was the second one, about the guy taking his niece and nephew out hunting for wildlife. When I realized he was “shooting” the deer with a camera and not a gun, it was a nice surprise. The final story was my second favorite about the boy who was being shipped off to his uncle’s after visiting with the trucker. That was a sweet story.

Similarly to the “too much narrative” comment above, I felt the narrator didn’t change his voice enough to my liking. I get he has a lower tone but still. But on that note, I felt he did the stories justice as he had that old cowboy/wanderer-type tone that fit well.

Great Listen!!!

Rambling
: Edd Voss

This is an amazing collection of 13 short stories. Each one will draw the listener in and make them feel as if they are part of the story. Now I must find "A Tree for America."

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Charles Kahlenberg voice was the perfect fit for this collection of stories.
