About this listen

Beatrice Bruteau was a philosopher whose vision of life was an inspiration to some of the most influential thinkers of our time. In Radical Optimism she shines new light on the deepest truth we can know about ourselves: each of us is one with God, here and now. She helps us to understand what this really means, to know the happiness it brings, and to cultivate a contemplative consciousness. This book is both enlightening and immensely practical.

In a world grown dark and desperate, Dr. Bruteau shows us how to embrace the spirit of optimism through authentic spirituality. Bringing her knowledge of Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and science to her exploration, she is both a brilliant synthesizer and an original thinker. Radical Optimism shows us who we really are, and with this understanding we can find the way beyond evil and suffering.

Dr. Bruteau was the author of 12 books, including What We Can Learn from the East, Evolution Toward Divinity, and The Easter Mysteries, and more than 100 articles, appearing in journals such as International Philosophical Quarterly, Cross Currents, and Cistercian Studies. She was a pioneer in developing a broad, inclusive vision of human reality, which can be best described as practical global spirituality.

A contemplative vision for spiritual practice

This is not just a book for Christians—it can be extremely useful for anyone who wants to deepen their contemplative practice, no matter what tradition they follow. With a background in Vedanta and Catholic Christianity, as well as the natural sciences, Dr. Bruteau is a pioneer in developing a broad, inclusive vision of human reality, which can be best described as practical global spirituality. “Meditation is a way of meeting God,” she says. “Experiencing the presence and reality of God is what it is all about.” Her message is radical in that she settles for nothing less than this meeting.
