About this listen

Charles Warren, Los Angeles attorney, has dedicated his career to aiding people in financial straits. He is particularly skilled at the art of recovering assets that have been embezzled or hidden. In his newest case, helping a beautiful young widow find the money missing from her late husband's investment accounts, Charlie recognizes a familiar scheme—one that echoes the con job that targeted his own widowed mother many years before, and that led him, as a teenager, to commit a crime of retribution that still weighs on his conscience.

Charlie can't get the present case out of his mind, but within hours of starting his investigation, he is followed, shot at, and has his briefcase stolen. It's clear that someone doesn't want him following the trail of the missing money but, as Charlie continues to pursue answers, he quickly becomes too entangled in the web of fraud, betrayal, and career criminals surrounding the theft to escape its deadly snare.

A nail-biting tale of conspiracy and pursuit from Thomas Perry, "a dominating force in the world of contemporary suspense thrillers" (Publishers Weekly), Pro Bono is sure to have listeners on the edge of their seats.

Fun romp of thieves. Light and thoughtful. I enjoy this character, Charley Warren. this review feels like a book report to simply give props to the author.

Love Thomas Perry and ALL his books are excellent. Especially the "Butcher Boy" series. However, this story goes DEEP into detail, as Perry does, and it's excellent. But super thin in detail when the main character is attacked with guns and our main character kills the perps. Just skips all the detail as to the happenings with the police etc. Just not what I expected from Perry.

This was an entertaining and modestly suspenseful legal novel. A plucky young attorney with a personal history of dealing with a step-father con man forcefully deals with small flocks of grifters and financial service embezzlers to save the personal finances and win the love of a beautiful widow.

Entertaining legal thriller

Thomas Perry is a favorite of mine, nobody writes about financial shenanigans better. This was fascinating with lots of action. The reader was perfect.

Excellent as always

Pace and narration and story were strong. Worth a listen if you’re into the author’s other books.

Worth the listen, crowd pleaser

I'm still a regular reader of Perry, but his early works are still the best. This novel has lots of mundane details to fill out the pages unfortunately. The characters are well-drawn and the plot isn't bad, but it slows down so often that I find myself reading the news, etc, while keeping an ear to the narrative - waiting for something interesting to happen. The narrator works at making it compelling and is quite acceptable. Overall, though, it's just an OK Thomas Perry novel. (Takes the Lord's name in vain.)

Not Much For Excitement

Entertaining book but kinda unbelievable. But still a good book. But kinda unbelievable. 4 stars.

The story was really over 2/3 the way through. I’m less Linda being duped again. Oh no don’t warn her she may be a target. Go with strangers to a remote lake and get killed.

Thomas Perry used to be better. Just churning g the out now.

Mindless Expected Ending

It was a good story that kept me interested. I disliked when stories get stupid and there were a couple of times when the main character was in a position where they should have called 911 and he didn't. If he had the story would have been shorter but less involved.

Good but frustrating

I’m a huge Thomas Perry fan and this one was an enjoyable read. When is the next one due out? I’ve read all the others. Mr. Perry is my favorite author in this genre!

Another Winner!
