Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author and renowned pastor Timothy Keller explores the power of prayer.

Christians are taught in their churches and schools that prayer is the most powerful way to experience God. But aside from learning prayers by rote, few receive instruction or guidance in how to make the most of this essential Christian act - how to make prayer genuinely meaningful. In Prayer, renowned pastor Timothy Keller delves into the many facets of this everyday act.

With his trademark insights and energy, Keller offers brilliant and inspirational biblical guidance, as well as specific prayers for certain situations, such as dealing with grief, loss, love, and forgiveness. He discusses ways to make prayers more personal and powerful, and how to establish a practice of prayer that works for each listener.

Dr. Keller's previous books have sold more than one million copies. His Redeemer Presbyterian Church is not only a major presence in his home base of New York, it has also helped to launch more than 250 other churches in 48 cities around the world. His teachings have already helped millions, the majority of whom pray regularly. And with Prayer, he'll show them how to find a deeper connection with God.

Great study on Prayer!

Combining the perspectives of Augustine, Luther, and Calvin, tempered by his own experience, Keller greatly demystifies Prayer to something we all can and should do.

Simply Excellent

What can I say here that adequately conveys the quality and value of the concepts taught in this book? Well, if you want to overcome the myths and errors often thought and taught about prayer. Or, if you want to gain a deep and abiding relationship with the God of all Creation. Or, if you need motivation and want to gain heart for prayer. Or, if you want to understand the different forms of prayer and why they important. Or, if you want to overcome dryness, self-centeredness, and pride which is inhibiting your relationship with God and others. Or, if you need a means to engage in regular and effective prayer ranging from simple beginning steps to sophisticated and deep. If you are facing any or all of these challenges or one of many others - then READ this book. Don't hesitate. You will not regret it.

Prayer is a Sail Boat and a Row Boat

Would you listen to Prayer again? Why?

Yes! There is a dense amount of information to digest concerning the practice of prayer. I think as I implement these practices into my prayer I will be coming back to find a new practice to apply.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Prayer?

1. Keller's reminder that our relationship with other humans and with God are not separable.
2. Choosing actions out of love for God not self preservation or self righteousness.
3. Praying even when we do not feel the strong presence of God.

What does Sean Pratt bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Pratt captures the emotions that Keller is wanting to convey so well! His tone and volume allowed for spiritual truths to create a more emotional impact.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Sorry, dumb answer for dumb question.

Any additional comments?

Ya...why did you ask me to give a movie title for this book?

Excellent.

Always blessed by Tim Keller, and so grateful for the ministry God has given him. I’m sure I’m not alone in admitting prayer has always been one of the greatest gifts, and yet experientially so difficult to enter into, remain in, and recognize the fruit of in my life. The book was an outstanding review of how so many saints from Church history have gifted their legacy to us and contributed, mostly through their thoughtful (and prayerful!) exposition of the Psalms, to establishing the rich but nevertheless flexible habits of prayer. Like so many living in what so often seems like our frenetic and disenchanted (Charles Taylor) modern world, it is ever so difficult to find—to make—time for communion with our triune God. Perhaps the one thing needful to begin to heal us. Thank you Tim, and Lord, help.

Excellent book on prayer!

I've listened and relistened to each chapter and will do so again. Rich book on prayer. Not a leisurely read.
Not a great narration.
