Story
Cadence and her sister possess the seeds of glory and ruin—or so their father always insisted. Cadence never understood what he meant until Airlie’s seed of power is activated, turning her into the most powerful mage in generations. Despite knowing it must mean her own dormant seed is much more malevolent, Cadence is swept away to the distant Mage’s Guild in her sister’s wake. She’s used to living in Airlie’s shadow, but she can’t see a place for herself in this new world. Nor can she believe in the apparent interest of the charming Zeke. A dragon, a fae, and a pixie walk into a bookstore… Sounds like a joke, right? For me, it's just an ordinary day on the job. At least, it has been ever since my aunt disappeared and left me with her store, her cat, and a whole lot of unanswered questions. My whole life, I've been told to stay hidden. Pretend I'm human. Sell books, drink tea, and never betray the truth of what I am. But it turns out my aunt had secrets, and a lot of those secrets seem to involve me ending up dead. To survive, I'm going to have to reckon with my past, even if it means placing my trust in a total stranger.

The haunted look in her eyes as she was recaptured by the palace guards is something Josie, daughter of the village doctor, has never forgotten. For Josie, the palace is a mystery that grows more intriguing after she meets the captain of the guards, a man known only as Hammer, as mysterious and captivating as the palace itself. Publisher's summary
A Spoken Mage companion novel
When a Sekali princess unexpectedly bursts into Elena and Lucas’s betrothal celebrations, Ardann is forced to send a team to investigate her claims of a new enemy. The last thing Saffron expects, or wants, is to be called on to assist. But she can’t risk disgracing her family by refusing to join the expedition.
Julian, on the other hand, leaps at the chance to distinguish himself and gain favor with the Sekalis by helping the princess. What he doesn’t expect is to find himself equally interested in the chance to prove himself to an inconsequential Callinos girl he’s only ever thought of as Finnian’s shadow.
But the further the team goes into the mountains, the more mysteries they uncover. And with their usual defenses and compositions inexplicably failing, Saffron and Julian will have to rely on each other if they’re to defend their kingdom and escape with both their hearts and lives intact.
If you enjoy strong heroines, fantasy worlds, adventure, intrigue, and romance, then try the Spoken Mage series now!

A good stand alone or completion of a series
It’s a good listen if you had listen to the Spoken Mage series it wraps up a lot of lose ends and it’s fun.
If you haven’t listened to the series it’s still a great listen either reason it’s fun, mystery, romance and conflict on several levels. I enjoyed it

fantasy romance novel
The audiobook is well made, no complaints about the quality of the narration. This story is slightly different from the others set in the same world (spoken mage and hidden mage series'). It is written more in a style of a traditional romance novel compared to the style of a fantasy novel as the others were. This one switches between the male and female perspective which is not uncommon in romance fiction. I'm not sure why anyone reviewed it stating that this switch or change was confusing to the story. It was perfectly easy to follow and the story moves seamlessly with no difficult to comprehend who is narrating or interruption to the story line. My one complaint is that it does feel like the two characters are quick to identify their feelings as love, but again this isn't unusual for a romance novel. The story is also significantly shorter, being one stand-alone novel compared to a multi novel series, than the others so I don't think the reviews that complain about this fact as a major issue to the story are being fair on that point. Obviously from the beginning you expect the two protagonists will find their way together (it was indicated in the final spoken mage story so that shouldn't be a spoiler or shock). The story still holds a lot of fantasy elements that are surprising and overall it's a very enjoyable read. It's my least favorite in the related series books (personally I like the hidden mage series' the best) but it's fully worth reading and enjoying. I would love to read more stories set in this fantasy world Cellier created here. I hope to see more in the future and you should definitely buy and enjoy this book.
