About this listen
"This book is a miraculous event." –Elizabeth Gilbert, from the foreword
A transformative path for women to reclaim their power in a world all too eager to strip it away
Women know what it’s like to feel powerless. We have had power taken from us and used over us, and sometimes we have had to give it away for our own safety. But when power is built internally, it is stronger and more enduring than that bestowed externally. In Power, renowned leadership coach Kemi Nekvapil introduces a new framework for cultivating your power from the inside out.
When you tap into the power that comes from within, you have the capacity to rebuild yourself. You give yourself the opportunity to break free from chronic people-pleasing and start making choices that align with your needs and values. You stop living and leading with apology, and instead use your power as a force for good.
Through the principles of Presence, Ownership, Wisdom, Equality, and Responsibility, Power invites you to stop waiting for power to be handed to you and instead choose it for yourself and on your own terms. Drawing on stories from her own life as a Black woman in a society where power is often used as a tool for fear and obedience, and from the lives of leaders, gamechangers, and everyday women who’ve learned to step into their power, Nekvapil shows you how to practice, build, and feel your inner force.

Story
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Story
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Period.” In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, and with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.

Story
There are breaking points in all our lives when we realize that the way things have been done before just don’t work for us anymore, be it the way we approach our relationships, our belief systems, our work, our education, even our rest. For activist, philanthropist, and CEO Rachel E. Cargle, reimagining—the act of creating in our minds that which does not exist but that we believe can and should—has been a lifelong process. Reimagining served as the most powerful catalyst for Cargle’s personal transformation from a small-town Christian wife to an incisive queer feminist voice of a generation.

The bestselling author explains why self-acceptance is counterculture, how virtues can turn into dangerous vices, and why healing is a nonlinear process that leads to gentleness. The most liberating message might be, “We don't need to focus on ‘fixing’ ourselves. As we focus on living from our heart center, anything that’s not in alignment with that light will fall away.”

What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.

Why have history's greatest minds - from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson along with today's top performers, from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities - embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise. The Daily Stoic offers a daily devotional of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

One of my favourite audiobooks
I've listened to this book 3 times. Kemi's excellent storytelling and sincere reading paint a picture of a lifelong journey from a powerless position to a powerful one. I hope this book inspires more of her kind of power in the world - of raising each other up, not powering over others. She shares her own stories and the stories of others that are very vulnerable and talks about racism and representation in a thought-provoking way that encourages positive change.

I met Kemi at a writing retreat in Santa Fe, NM. She is as kind as she is powerful. This book is packed with wisdom and thoughts on how I as a person of color who is also disabled, can also own my power and be present in the world. I am not an apology. I am my own power.

You are not an apology
This book is stunning—it brims with an irrepressible spirit, it makes you think and cry, and it makes you want to stop apologizing for being yourself, even if you’re terrified because you’ve never known another way of being.
Not long ago, I rejected the word power. As Kemi shows us, most women have only known power as “power over” and we’ve either imitated it or rejected it, in the workplace and our homes. And even if we liked the idea of power being something different, we didn’t know how to act upon this idea.
Now I do. I will start with saying “I am” and owning the words that follow: Brave. Committed. Effervescent. Growing. Poetic. Beautiful. Powerful.
Thank you, Kemi, for gracing women with this treasure of a book.

Angry energy
I got this book because I felt like it would help me to find power as a woman however, the reading of this was so full of heavy energy. It seems like the author is very angry and bitter. This did not invoke power. It was actually quite infuriating. I couldn’t even get past half of it
