Robert Day is unsure of not only who he is, but what he is. Doubts about sexuality and gender lead him inexorably down a dark path into a world of subjugation, domination, cross-dressing and a loss of self-worth. He lacks identity and purpose. It is only after the accidental death of an abusive and exploitative lover that he realises his true nature to rise, like a Phoenix, from the ashes.
