About this listen

It's way more than just a game!

PerfectQuestion is back! He's running and gunning his way across an incredible civilization-building game set on Mars. But this time he's employed as an online ringer for a corrupt dictatorship and trying to avoid getting "disappeared" in a reckless world of intrigue, epic parties, sports cars, and women who are as dangerous as they are beautiful.

Five million in gold says he can do it and put the next Sultan on the throne by leading a rag-tag clan of gaming jihadis to victory, but revolution and revolt are afoot. The long knives are out in Calistan for the hero of Soda Pop Soldier and anyone else who gets in a murderous prince's way.

Nick Cole Does it Again - Heavy Handed History

Nick Cole in his visceral, heavy handed writing makes everything real and inescapable, including his overt political attitude. Perfect Question has a new trial: being a strategist for a dictatorship in Islamofascist Calistan (Southern California). Part of the way through selling his soul he gets to see how cruel is path is.

Will that be enough to keep him safe and bring him to happiness? Nick Cole pulls you through every step of the way and I felt compelled to finish this in one sitting.

Rich world with outstanding finale

It's been years since I've been that surprised and impressed with an ending. Nick Cole is an amazing talent, and this third installment in this gamelit thriller series is becoming one of my favorite in the last decade. This follow up to book one, Ctrl-Alt-Revolt, and the sequel, Soda Pop Soldier, adds a surprising twist to the direction of the world. Our hero, PerfectQuestion is a world champion in the mega first person shooter gameland which is so influential that nations may rise and fall based on his performance. The lure of a position on one team which will pay him $5 million dollars a month opens up more risk than it's worth.
I really enjoyed Nick's writing. As usual, his gift at details evokes a strong sense of reality in the worlds he weaves together. For example, the name of his samurai sword is perfect. Those two words speak so much more, and brought me into the world just like his donut and pizza descriptions.
In this adventure we see a gamer who is justifiably at the top of the first person shooter world. The battle scenes are epic and very well drawn out in strategy and excitement. On the spectrum of LITRPG, this is pretty light as far as game stats go. There is no leveling, and no real tech trees, which on one hand I appreciated because the story moves pretty quickly, but at other times I thought the advancement could have benefited from more detail on how the game evolves with experience and accolades from the battles. The stakes in this are gold for real life, a possible collapse of civilization (whether PQ wins or loses, you won't know until the end) a love story that drives a powerful subplot into the action, and whether or not the good guys will escape the final battle with their lives. So, high stakes regardless of knowing what level PQ is. Nick has a gift for balancing detail with pace, so I respect his choices, even if I prefer LITRPG with more stats.
I also really enjoyed the myth woven in with the supernatural samurai dream escapes, which has a huge payoff I didn't see coming.
In the end, I can't wait for the next book and will be more eager to pick up another of his titles because of how he's proven time and again that he knows how to give the reader what they want in the end.
The narrator Eric Michael Summerer produces a high quality audiobook. I'd listen to another of his works with confidence that the story will shine in his professionalism.

Brilliant take on society pre-uplift

This is a take on society pre-uplift. Get over your political bias and your preconceived notion the author might be trying to offend your tender feelings. Too Bad! If you are not familiar with Savage Wars and the author's other work then you might want to get on board.

I have been waiting for the author to delve into pre-uplift society - this series captures the utter failure of government, flavor of the moment movements, and the path SJW is destined for.

Nick Cole is an American Treasure

Do it. Listen to this book. if you are here then you probably listened to the 1st one... if so, what are you waiting for?
This book kept me hooked from page 1. Nick Cole is amazing. His mind must be a very interesting place, and maybe Im wrong but from his words in these books, and others ive checked out (Galaxy's Edge brought me here lol) I believe he's a pretty good dude. Either way, his writing style and imagination are unique. And honestly, one day, I hope he gets the credit he deserves. Kudos on another hit. Will we get another? please?

Something new and damn exciting

Cole knows how to write action and his stories are so interesting that you really do not know where they are going but it’s a hell of a time finding out.

Falls upon its own sword.

Within the covers of this book are the seeds of a good story, but the story is hampered by the perpetual, hammering references to real world, modern political bickering. It is every bit as ham-fisted and poorly integrated into the plot as any appropriated property the author might have his own grievance with from major comic book publishers or other entertainment sources.

In short, the author hamstrings his own story and characters in an attempt to showcase his grievances, in every way becoming the thing he rails against.
