About this listen

From acclaimed film producer and novelist Galt Niederhoffer comes another no-holds-barred examination of the American domestic ideal. Poison is a literary psychological thriller audiobook about a marriage that follows minor betrayal into a bubbling stew of lies, cruelty, manipulation, and danger.

Cass and Ryan Connor have achieved family nirvana. With three kids between them, a cat, a yard, and a home they built and feathered, they seem to have the modern family dream. Their family, including Cass' two children from previous relationships, has recently moved to Portland - a new start for their new lives. Cass and Ryan have stable, successful careers, and they are happy. But trouble begins almost imperceptibly. First with small omissions and white lies that happen daily in any marital bedroom. They seem insignificant, but they are quickly followed by a series of denials and feints that mushroom and then cyclone in menace.

With life-or-death stakes and irreversible consequences, Poison is a chilling and irresistible reminder that the closest bond designed to protect and provide for each other and for children can change in a minute.

GREAT first novel!!!!!

Would you listen to Poison again? Why?

I don't like to listen to most books a second time just because there is always something new out there.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked the wife because I always root for underdog.

What does Hillary Huber bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Id probably skim a bit and not pick up on clues.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES but a little too long for that

Any additional comments?

I like to give first time authors a chance and I wasn't dissappointed

Eye Opening Suspense

Although this is a story of murderous intent, the author still conveys normal family life. I really like both those threads happening at the same time. The victim draws so much sustenance from family. All I really want to say is that I enjoyed this book more than enough to give it five stars. It is exemplary for its genre: domestic psychological suspense.

I was hoping it would end soon

What did you like best about Poison? What did you like least?

I wanted to like this, it had some of the elements you would want in a family drama/mystery, but then the dysfunctional relationship and the back and forth got really frustrating. I was already heavily invested in the book, and wanted to know if there would be any surprises in the end, so I carried on....but honestly I didn't enjoy this one. I also found a lot of the attributes to be vastly unrealistic.

Do you think Poison needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Definitely not...

Suspenseful!

It was suspenseful - I didn't want to stop reading. Only negative is use of expletives.

TOO PREACHY

I had to suspend belief so many times in this book that it became annoying. I appreciate the horrible treatment so many women experience in divorce/custody situations. But if someone was so obviously poisoning another person, it stretches credulity to think that person would go back to take the poison "just to be sure". Silly. And it is unfortunate because the narrator is so excellent. Too much information about chemical compounds and the law to make the story satisfying, I could not wait for this book to end.

Is it Poison or it Me!

The main character Cass has 2 problems... Her husband Ryan ...& her devotion? Is it devotion or plain ole stupidity.....? I don't know... if Cass is really being poisoned or is she..herself, poison?....Galt Nlederholt has the reader definitely captured... So captured as you listen to the excellent narration by Hilary Huber...you want to actually reach out and slap Cass, once...twice maybe three times during this very adventurous audiobook.
Nlederholt has you angry and talking furiously back to the main character... yelling at her even...talking to yourself asking if you were her?
If you were.... could you....would you leave ? That's hard to say when you carry as much baggage as Cass does....Run Cass Run!
A delightfully shuddering tale of Poison.

Failed climax

Just as you think here it comes, it’s a boring let down. Almost like the author realized they had to hurry and end the book just as you become invested. The ending could have been so much better. Disappointed. Almost worth the read.
