About this listen

A timely and powerful story about a teen girl from a poor neighborhood striving for success, from acclaimed author Renee Watson.

Jade believes she must get out of her neighborhood if she's ever going to succeed. Her mother says she has to take every opportunity. She has. She accepted a scholarship to a mostly-white private school and even Saturday morning test prep opportunities. But some opportunities feel more demeaning than helpful. Like an invitation to join Women to Women, a mentorship program for "at-risk" girls. Except really, it's for black girls. From "bad" neighborhoods.

But Jade doesn't need support. And just because her mentor is black doesn't mean she understands Jade. And maybe there are some things Jade could show these successful women about the real world and finding ways to make a real difference.

Friendships, race, privilege, identity - this compelling and thoughtful story explores the issues young women face.

A deeply interspective read

Having the author read brought a even greater quality to an already profound book. A colorful and mosaic view of the young black women's lived experience in the US.

Extraordinary!

I teach 8th grade Language Arts, and this book was recommended to me by our school librarian. I am so glad I had the opportunity to listen to this important novel read by the actual author. We need to hear these stories, so that people can learn from Jade's courage to speak up!

Black Girl Magic!!

This was a great read! I love how Jade gained her confidence and began to speak up. Once she did she influenced the trajectory of her path, she began to receive what her heart desired and deserved!

She’s got a point!!

Story was short and sweet. Relatable and true. It tied well with the title. Loved that the story focused solely on the main character. We didn’t read too much back story about other characters. I was surprised with the incorporation of spanish but it made sense. Overall good.

Compelling, Beautiful Story

Loved this book. I learned a great deal from the young protagonist as she, herself, learned and grew, teaching those around her with her insights, bravery, developing strength and grace. Beautifully written; a very talented author.

Excellent Read!!!

Great story, chalked full of important life lessons! Dreams are meant to be idle, they are meant to be achieved. Sometimes there are obstacles to work through in order for that to happen and this book is inspiring for those who may be in that place!

Transparent and Thought Provoking

LOVE hearing the author read this book. Her voice and expression added to the main character and her story. As a white teacher, I needed to hear this story of a black teenager finding her place in this world.
