Of all the different shifter species in the Okeanos Archipelago, none is more feared than the Lykans, the wolf shifters, diseased, destructive thieves who had been ostracized decades ago. In fact, history shows that no human has ever survived mating with a Lykan.

When the three of them are shipwrecked on an isolated island after a storm, Julian and Porter find themselves in the middle of the Lykan lunar mating cycle. Both wanting Alyssa, they give into their desires and choose to share her, never realizing they could be risking her life.

However, when Alyssa falls ill, Julian and Porter must return to Anthros, the island of the enemy, to save the one they love.

A Different Kind of Werewolf Story

Did Derrick McClain do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I think the way he voiced each character really helped me tell Porter and Julian apart, especially when things got, ahem, close.

Any additional comments?

I wish the islands and society had been rounded out a little bit more, through description or through the three characters traveling through the world. Each individual too could have used a more full personality, and I would like to have found out more about the mens' past. Though the story moved slowly at first, I was very happy I listened until the end as things became more complicated and exciting. The intimate scenes were very well written and read, pushing boundaries of what I've heard in the past without making me uncomfortable.

Would you listen to Pieces of Three again? Why?

Yes, definitely. It's not my normal genre, but I enjoy paranormal (+1 star) and liked the sample. I'm really glad I listened. It is more of what I would call heavy romance than erotica, which is a plus for me (+2 stars). There was a good balance of characterization and pace (+1 star). Not too much detail or too little (+1 star). It isn't a top-ten for me, but is definitely a keeper.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pieces of Three?

The ending "twist" was clever. I guessed it very early, but it was good.

What does Derrick McClain bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I am so glad there were no squeaky female voices (+3 stars). In some genres, it's no big deal, but this is not the kind of book you want to laugh at. He did a great job with a female main character, and I had no problem telling any of the characters apart (+1 star).

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Actually, I kept falling asleep and having to replay parts, not because the story isn't attention-holding, but because the narrator has a very smooth voice. No outbursts of laughter from Kermit voices (+1 star)! I've already put it in my "nighttime track." (+25 stars for that.)

Any additional comments?

It was an easy-to-follow, well-structured story with excellent narration. I would definitely be interested in more from both the author and narrator.
