About this listen

Pieces of terror, pieces of suspense, pieces of darkness combine to create Pieces of Hate, master storyteller Ray Garton's short story collection. Nine works, including "A Gift From Above", a new novel that will surely hit you from below, are here compiled for the sole purpose of scaring you onto the next page. Garton illuminates the dark corners in us all and highlights the depths of the human condition. He takes our ordinary, daily assumptions and turns them on the reader to frightening effect. He makes reading terrifying yet compulsive. He scares us in so many ways. Here are a but a few in one collection.

A good and eclectic mix of shorts from Mr. Garton.

Any additional comments?

I got this one with KU and got the audio for free. This is a review of the audio edition.

A good and eclectic mix of shorts from Mr. Garton. Alien gifts from above, High School reunions, kitty’s revenge, Lawrence Welk, erotic horror authors and the Devil himself. Yep.

Great stories with a terrible narrator

I am not sure who made the decision to get Robert C Brewster as the narrator for an anthology of horror stories but that made a terrible error. He is the voice of disaster movie previews. Rich and deep and slow in cadence which totally doesn't fit with the stories written. Everything ends up sounding like a television commercial. Even worse, his inflections are way off. He has a tendency to over pronounce certain words and fragments while flying by others. It is sad because this is one of Ray Garton's finest works and I couldn't even finish it. Do yourself a favor and at least listen to the sample. If you want to listen to Ray Garton at his finest with a correct narrator download The Girl In the Basement. It is excellent.

The art of reading audiobooks is completely absent

What would have made Pieces of Hate better?

A different narrator is desperately needed. A narrator should not be a heavy smoker, and should be able to understand and convey what he/she is reading. Proper inflection is not an option. I now understand why former actors are common audiobook presenters.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

This is a collection of short stories, it's a mixed bag. Some are truly horrific and great (Bait), others are long diatribes on religion or morality (of course with a liberal point of view). This is not Garton's best work.

Would you be willing to try another one of Robert C. Brewster’s performances?

NEVER AGAIN!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment and disgust.

Any additional comments?

I don't know what they were thinking hiring the narrator. Do they not have ears?
