Ophelia und ihre Schwester Genevieve sind mit dem Tod mehr als vertraut, denn ihre Mutter ist Nekromantin, und sie haben täglich mit Geistern zu tun. Dann wird ihre Mutter brutal ermordet, und Ophelias Leben steht kopf – die mächtige Magie der Familie wird auf sie übertragen, aber nicht nur das: Sie erbt auch die hohen Schulden, die auf dem Haus liegen. Kurzerhand beschließt ihre Schwester Genevieve, ein tödliches Risiko einzugehen: Sie will an den Phantasma-Spielen teilnehmen, deren Gewinnerin ein Wunsch gewährt werden soll.
Doch der Weg dahin ist gefährlich, und viele sterben bei dem Versuch, die Spiele zu gewinnen. Um ihre Schwester zu retten, macht auch Ophelia sich auf nach Phantasma, einem verfluchten Haus mit verwinkelten Gängen und prunkvollen Ballsälen, in denen Dämonen und tödliche Versuchungen auf die Teilnehmenden warten. Auf neun Stockwerken müssen sie sich neun teuflischen Herausforderungen stellen. Dabei kommt Ophelia nicht nur einem sorgsam gehüteten Familiengeheimnis auf die Spur, sie muss auch mit aller Kraft gegen einen inneren Dämon ankämpfen, eine Stimme in ihrem Kopf, die ihr Leben beherrscht und all ihre Ängste kennt.
Dann taucht Blackwell auf, ein arroganter Fremder, von dem sich Ophelia auf unwiderstehliche Weise angezogen fühlt. Er bietet ihr einen Deal an, und sie beschließt, ihm zu trauen – nicht ahnend, dass sie sich damit noch mehr in Gefahr bringt. Denn in Phantasma gibt es nur eines, das tödlicher ist als die Spiele selbst ... sich zu verlieben.
