Why did humans abandon hunting and gathering for sedentary communities dependent on livestock and cereal grains and governed by precursors of today's states? Most people believe that plant and animal domestication allowed humans, finally, to settle down and form agricultural villages, towns, and states, which made possible civilization, law, public order, and a presumably secure way of living. But archaeological and historical evidence challenges this narrative.

The real stories behind the scenery of America’s national parks. For 12 years, Andrea Lankford lived in the biggest, most impressive national parks in the world, working a job she loved. She chaperoned baby sea turtles on their journey to sea. She pursued bad guys on her galloping patrol horse. She jumped into rescue helicopters bound for the heart of the Grand Canyon. She won arguments with bears. She slept with a few too many rattlesnakes. Hell yeah, it was the best job in the world! Fortunately, Andrea survived it.

Story
The grid is an accident of history and of culture, in no way intrinsic to how we produce, deliver and consume electrical power. Yet this is the system the United States ended up with, a jerry-built structure now so rickety and near collapse that a strong wind or a hot day can bring it to a grinding halt. The grid is now under threat from a new source: renewable and variable energy, which puts stress on its logics as much as its components.

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit.

You may think you don’t have the time or the money to start a big permaculture project. But permaculture doesn’t need to be overwhelming. You can start as small as you like, and you can move at a pace that suits you. Don’t feel you have to learn everything in one go and rush out to transform a whole wilderness in a year. Just deal in manageable chunks, and you’ll do just fine. Even if all you have done is tend to a few tomato plants on your window ledge, you can become an expert gardener; all it takes is a little time, patience, and practice.

Transforming Backyards into Thriving Ecosystems
I recently dove into "Permaculture Gardening for the Absolute Beginner" and was thoroughly impressed. The author, Josie, has a knack for breaking down complex permaculture principles into understandable chunks, making it accessible not just to seasoned gardeners but to novices like myself. The book is structured brilliantly with a detailed table of contents that lets you jump straight to topics of interest, and each chapter concludes with a helpful summary that ties everything together.
What sets this guide apart is its blend of foundational gardening techniques with advanced concepts like integrating animals into your garden or mastering rainwater collection. Josie's engaging storytelling weaves through the chapters, turning what could be a dry subject into a delightful read. This book has become an indispensable tool in my gardening journey, offering practical advice that I've started applying in my own backyard with great enthusiasm. Whether you're starting your first container garden or looking to enhance your green space with sustainable practices, this book is a great tool to have in your gardening toolshed! Highly recommended for anyone looking to start on a gardening adventure with nature as their guide.

The beginner gardener’s dream!
Ever imagined turning that neglected backyard into a thriving garden? Neither did I—until I stumbled upon this book. My idea of gardening was watching happy rabbits eating dandelions in my backyard. But here I am, cultivating my own organic food forest.
The book explains how to grow a bountiful harvest with minimal know-how. It’s full of permaculture secrets that even a serial plant killer like me can use to grow healthy food, so this book is truly the beginner gardener’s dream. If you're like me and ready to transform your barren plot into the envy of the neighborhood and improve your health, and the health of the environment, this might be just what you need.

Ready to Re-Start My Ecosystem
I started my own garden in my backyard a few years ago and it had a lot of success that first summer. The year after that was not as good for sure, and last year was quite terrible. After listening to this very comprehensive audiobook, I am extremely confident that I will be able to restart and revamp my garden and have it flourish in the robust ecosystem that I intended from the start. There is so much amazing information in this book, you can't go wrong if you are just starting out, or restarting your garden like me. I really found chapter 12 to be very interesting that talked about collecting rainwater which I had never really considered before. Fantastic book!!

Learn with this Friendly and Comprehensive Guide
If you have imagined Permaculture to be a complicated and all-consuming system, this book may convince you, as it did me, to begin anywhere with small steps and learn. Entranced by M. Fukuoka with his one-straw revolution since the 1970s, I was waiting to try Permaculture until I had more space, time and confidence. PERMACULTURE GARDENING for the ABSOLUTE BEGINNER with its friendly manner and answers for everything has finally given me a start. Helping readers become Permaculturists is as much the mission of this book as providing us with the tools and information for effective gardening. We are part of the ecosystem that we will build even as we begin. From a single herb growing on the balcony to a farm with animals, all situations are covered, illustrated with numerous charts and references. I especially appreciate the detailed Table of Contents. Even though I have the hard copy, I appreciate that the audiobook is convenient and well narrated.

A Garden Bursting Full Of Life
Permaculture Gardening for the Beginner will be a game-changer for anyone who wants to explore the world of sustainable gardening. From the very first page, you will be guided through the principles of permaculture and how to apply them in your own backyard, no matter how limited your space may be. I loved the “planting seeds” introduction, which felt important on more levels than one. It is a comprehensive and extensive listen but broken down by digestible wisdom. Listening to the audio felt casual, friendly, and down-to-earth. I greatly appreciated the author’s emphasis on working with nature rather than against it. As a person who has healed from Lyme disease using bee venom therapy (BVT), these are wise words. If I can handle thousands of bee stings, I should be able to get my hands dirty in the gardening game. I wish I had this book before COVID-19 hit the ground running. The practical tips, techniques, and bonus materials will serve you and may even spark a newfound passion for growing your own food in an eco-friendly way. If you’re looking for a GARDEN BURSTING FULL OF LIFE, this book is a must-have.

Exciting and Empowering!
I have never had a garden before, although both my parents were avid gardeners. We always had plenty extra to share with neighbors and lots of healthy veggies for the family. So, as an adult, I have wanted to live that healthy lifestyle again, but the basic row-by-row garden plan has been daunting for me. Way too much work with the busy life I live.
BUT I AM EXCITED NOW that I have this CLEARLY WRITTEN and WELL-ORGANIZED book. Gardening is doable now that I have a guidebook. I am on the road to a healthier life!
THANK YOU, JOSIE BECKHAM. I am getting pots this week. I can do this!
