About this listen

This new edition of Perfect Daughters, a pivotal book in the ACoA movement, identifies what differentiates the adult daughters of alcoholics from other women.

When this groundbreaking book first appeared over 10 years ago, Dr. Ackerman identified behavior patterns shared by daughters of alcoholics. Adult daughters of alcoholics - "perfect daughters" - operate from a base of harsh and limiting views of themselves and the world. Having learned that they must function perfectly in order to avoid unpleasant situations, these women often assume responsibility for the failures of others. They are drawn to chemically dependent men and are more likely to become addicted themselves. More than just a text that identifies these behavior patterns, this book collects the thoughts, feelings and experiences of 12 hundred perfect daughters, offering listeners an opportunity to explore their own life's dynamics and thereby heal and grow.

This edition contains updated information throughout the text, and completely new material, including chapters on eating disorders and abuse letters from perfect daughters in various stages of recovery, and helpful, affirming suggestions from Dr. Ackerman at the end of every chapter. This book is essential for everyone who found validation, hope, courage and support in the pages of the original Perfect Daughters, as well as new listeners and every therapist who confronts these issues.

Also includes: a comprehensive reference section and complete index.

Good information - meh narration

The narration of this book was… hard to listen too. I had to skip back many, many times as my mind would wander due to the meditative tone of this dude’s voice. I enjoyed the content of the book in that I also felt like it spoke directly to me, but seriously, can this guy BE any more dull?

painful to listen to but good information

If you are the daughter of an alcoholic this is a great book to put into perspective the things youe went through as a child. It's not really a how to recover book so much as sharing of people stories and recognizing that so many of us daughters have had a tough go of it because of our alcoholic parent(s).

At the end of the day we're all responsible for own recovery but it is nice to know you're not alone.

Great content, dramatic performance

I thought the book was good, useful, and well organized. The reader was a bit dramatic in his delivery. Since the topic is already so dramatic in the lives of DOAs, a less dramatic performance would have made it easier to listen to. Additionally, the parts written by women survivors would be better read in a woman’s voice.

Great book, horrible narration

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I can't tell if this narrator though we needed to be spoken to like small children or if he had been drinking himself. He spoke so slowly that he was nearly slurring his words. I felt like someone was trying to read me to sleep. It was so distracting I gave up a few hours into the book.

Life changing

I’ve struggled all of my childhood and much of my adult life feeling something was missing. I knew what I had endured growing up but had to detach emotionally to survive. Reading this book has brought so much clarity, relief and most of all, a sense of empowerment to forge through my own journey of recovery.

Excellent book. Narration is not so great.

The text itself is excellent. Given that the book is about daughters, it would have been better to have had an engaging, female narrator as opposed to the robotic, droning male narrator.
