"Brilliant, honest, and equal parts heartbreaking and soul-healing." (Laurie Halse Anderson, author of Shout)

"A singular voice in the world of literature." (Jason Reynolds, author of Long Way Down)

A powerful coming-of-age story about grief, guilt, and the risks a Filipino-American teenager takes to uncover the truth about his cousin's murder.

Jay Reguero plans to spend the last semester of his senior year playing video games before heading to the University of Michigan in the fall. But when he discovers that his Filipino cousin Jun was murdered as part of President Duterte's war on drugs, and no one in the family wants to talk about what happened, Jay travels to the Philippines to find out the real story.

Hoping to uncover more about Jun and the events that led to his death, Jay is forced to reckon with the many sides of his cousin before he can face the whole horrible truth - and the part he played in it.

As gripping as it is lyrical, Patron Saints of Nothing is a pause-resisting portrayal of the struggle to reconcile faith, family, and immigrant identity.

wonderful life lesson

I learned so much about the Philippines - its history and one view of its modern society. I also loved reading a book about a teenage boy coming into his own through emotional intelligence. My biggest critique is that all the female characters are only in service to his growth which still a reinforcement of patriarchy.

Beautiful, moving, exploration of masculinity and Phillippines history / contemporary society

This book was recommended by a friend of mine who teaches English to high school kids and I think it’s perfect and brilliant. I hope a lot of teens and adults read this book.

Beautiful and Tender.

The voice performer is SO GOOD. He does the accents of the characters, adding additional authenticity to the story because he is Filipino. So, so, so happy I read this book. The viewpoint as a third culture kid is outstanding.

A+ performance

This is an important story that will reach people across cultures. A great choice for students who are at a point of their lives where they are reflecting on important moments that have made them who and what they are today.

Story to remind you to take the time to reach out to those who are important to you

I loved the twists and turns of this story. It started out a little slow and cringe (like an adult trying to write from the viewpoint of a teenager), but it quickly got interesting. I loved seeing the personal growth of not only Jason, but those around him as well.

Unique Story

I am married to a Filipina. Her sons are around this age. I myself am still in my 30's and remember this age. The author is spot on with the POV. This is a story that must be told. There needs to be more novels written on Duterte's time in office so people can get an idea of what it is like in the phils.

The best way this story could be told

Really connected to this Filipino American story. Great thriller story that opens even deeper into the heart of the Filipino culture and spirit and the challenges it faces in the modern world.

Wow! Incredible story and gripping language.
