About this listen
Welcome to Earth+. The year is 2037, and nearly all human interactions have migrated to the virtual world. Now, true-crime fans don't just listen to podcasts or watch documentaries—they participate in hyper-realistic simulations and hunt for clues to solve the most famous and gruesome crimes in history. Criminal entertainment is a multibillion-dollar industry, and at the forefront is Past Crimes: known by its millions of fans as the Disneyland of Death.
Cassie West licenses crimes for V.I.C.E, spending long hours convincing grieving families to allow her to sell their tragedies to the highest bidder. Life is hard and the cost of living high, but she and her husband Harris have never been happier. After years of trying, Cassie is finally pregnant.
But leaving work late one evening, Cassie starts to worry. Harris isn't responding to texts or calls. Even worse, dozens of emergency drones seem to be heading in the same direction as she is: straight to their home. What she finds there changes everything. Soon, Cassie finds herself in a fight for survival, becoming a target in both the real and virtual worlds. But it's not just her own life at stake. If Cassie can't uncover the truth of what happened to her husband, thousands more may die...
Action-packed, satirical, and beyond compelling, Past Crimes examines our obsession with true crime and how the pain of others has become a multi-billion-dollar industry, while also exploring the sinister possibilities of the virtual world.

Story
Tomorrow, the funk descends on Manhattan, a noxious cloud that separates the island from the rest of the world and mutates the population. Some generations on, the surviving population exists amid the rubble of modernity, wearing our cast-off clothing, worshipping celebrities as dim gods, and using emojis in place of written language. The Island exists in a state of uneasy peace, with each neighborhood an independent fiefdom, protecting itself with scrap metal spears and Molotov cocktails.

When a salvage job on an old battlefield goes awry, Kril's left with no crew, no food, a suspiciously absent client, and far too many enemies. Fortunately, it's a big universe, and he's got a fast ship and the best pilot in twenty light-years to watch his back. His journey to keep 'er flying and get a crew back together will take him from rescue operations in collapsing freighters to fighting dinosaurs in the sewage canals of pirate paradises and to points beyond. Sergeant Harry Kabutt has seen better days. He's been shot down, blown up, and tossed to the wayside by the corporations, left to rot in a ratty apartment in gang territory. His own limbs? Shredded, cut away, and left to rot on a mountainside. The replacement mods? Likely to fall apart or leave him to die of sepsis. No longer an operator of the feared APS mecha, Kabutt has hit rock bottom. But he's on foot, he's armed, and he's in serious pain…now it's time to take that pain and spread it around the mega-city of Artem. See who flinches first.

Jon Ryan has some unfinished business. Since he caused the universe to reboot, well, he can't seem to find his wife of two billion years. That's one great big oops. He also can't find the massive time ship Aramthella and her human crew. Double oops. And then there's the matter of not knowing whey why there are several copies of key people in the new reality he must navigate. Triple oops. He actually knows one whole heck of a lot less about his current situation than seems healthy. But he's Jon Ryan, former fighter pilot turned android warrior for humankind.

Mostly great
Overall, it is a very good story captivating. Lots of plot twists. There are a few cringe moments during the book and you could just skip the last chapter as it is overly cringe. Everybody has to bow to “the message”. I wonder if the editor of publisher asked to add the cringe moments because overall it’s a great book, but recommend you skip that last chapter.

Makes you wonder what the virtual world holds!!!!
As a fan of Jason Pinter I was so happy to see he has written another book. If you haven’t listened to anything by him I would recommend listening to his Rachel Marin two book series narrated by the incredible Angela Dawe. That series is more mystery/thriller where this book is a mystery it’s more sci-fi. Also if you have Kindle Unlimited those two books are FREE to borrow with the Kindle edition. If Mr. Pinter happens to read his book reviews I would like to ask him if he plans to add to that excellent series because it doesn’t feel finished to me and I absolutely LOVE the books!! One can only hope!
Anyway, this book is very good. In this dystopian world the protagonist is Cassie West. Her deceased husband has become a symbol of evil. He’s been vilified by the public and media for bringing down a blight on humanity. Cassie has her doubts and soon finds herself arrested and tried for crimes she did not commit. Her crime has been reproduced in the virtual world where people spend much of their time and the only one who benefits is the owner of one of the most popular of those worlds called Past Crimes. A place people can visit to view or participate in some of the worst and most memorable crimes.
Ellen Quay does a great job narrating although I did listen at a 1.2 accelerated speed.
This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
