About this listen

A puzzling photograph, a box filled with faded toy horses, and a single fractured memory are all that Maya has left of her mother. In Grandmother's house in California, she lives like a captive, tethered by Grandmother's rules: no talk of her mother, no friends, no foolishness of any kind...until a shocking event changes everything.

A world away, in the rugged Wyoming wilderness, a wild mustang called Artemisia runs free, belonging only to the stars. In a land where mountain lions and wranglers pose an ever-present threat, she must vigilantly protect her new foal...until a devastating act separates them from their band.

Like a braided rein, Maya's and Artemisia's lives will ultimately intertwine. Together, they hold the key to each other's survival.

Editorial reviews

Award-winning veteran Kathleen McInerney brings to life the hunger for freedom that drives Pam Munoz Ryan's 11-year-old heroine Maya to seek out the important lessons about love and life that she's been denied under the control of her overprotective grandmother. The tone of McInerney's performance shifts into a greater solemnity as the narration passes back and forth between orphaned Maya and the perspective of the wild mare Artemisia whose destiny is linked to hers.

From the exacting snootiness of the members of high society who have constrained young Maya to the rustic twang of her Wyoming relatives who aid her in her journey of self-discovery, McInerney captures the spirit of Maya's adventure from sheltered naiveté to independence and strength.

I have listened to this at least 7 times and read the book 4 times. One of my all time favorites. The narrator is good. She does good voices. But the sinking parts make my ears bleed. LOVE THIS STRONGLY RECOMMEND !

Everything is great but the singing...

I loved this book. I couldn't envision how I would enjoy a tale about a horse and its rider. But of course it was a Pam Munoz Ryan book. I have learned that every story she pens is endearing. And this story comes with amazing life lessons. I heartily recommend this to children and adults.

Exhilarating and delightful adventure

This story is really interesting and exiting. I hope there is a number 2. That would be awesome. I love this book and I think you will too!

As an equestrian I find this book sweet, charming, and surprisingly realistic for a horse book. Really good job on the narrative part, and very Wild West type story, for example, I say “canter” instead of lope. Very nice book overall.

Beautiful Heartfelt Story

Where does Paint the Wind rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as an adult, but it was great. I reconnected to my girlhood days spent in love with horses, dreaming of horses and reading horse books. A refreshing read over the holidays.

Good for grown-up "horse girls" too!

Listen to this one with my horse crazy 10-year-old daughter. Both the narration and the story were excellent. It was delightful to watch my daughter become so absorbed in a story!

This was the first audio book that would actually keep my 11 y.o. daughter interested.

The story follows a young girl as she works through a myriad of adversity to find out more about her late parents, of who she remembers little. The author is quite knowledgeable in the ways of the equine and her writing imparts a lot of horse learning within the story, going as far as telling some of it through the thoughts of the main horse character.

It is well written, is fairly fast-paced and the reader does a good job with the different characters, without being too "hammy".

This is a great book for a 5 hr. car ride with a young (or old) horse lover!
